WESTMINSTER, Md. - On Friday, McDaniel College Director of Sports Medicine and Performance
Catharine Behrenshausen announced that
Matthew Schuler has joined the staff as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
"I am so excited to have Matt join our staff," said Behrenshausen. "He has an understanding of what needs to be done to create a complete, competitive, and determined student-athlete. He has the skill and knowledge to support the performance elevation goals for all of our programs. I am excited to see his wealth of experience and knowledge translate with our student-athletes."
Schuler came to the Hill after spending two years as a graduate assistant sports performance coach and recreational facility assistant manager at Salisbury where he played a crucial role in developing training programs for several sports, including baseball, softball, volleyball, and track & field. He also managed intern curriculums and maintained the campus recreational center.
Schuler's experience also includes a stint as a strength & conditioning intern with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, during the team's 2025 season. He managed team activities and training sessions, and recorded player data, and executed warm-up and training sessions on the field and in the weight room,

In the summer of 2024, Schuler was a summer Olympic sports performance intern at Division I Northwestern working with several sports teams and assisting in performance monitoring and training sessions.
Schuler's experience in strength and conditioning began during his time at Maryville University in St. Louis where he was the head student lab coordinator from August 2022 to May 2024. He also worked as an assistant performance coach for TRAINology Fitness, focusing on developing youth hockey players.
Schuler holds a Master of Science in Health & Human Performance from Salisbury and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength & Conditioning from Maryville. He is an NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and holds certifications in first aid, CPR, and AED from the American Heart Association.
As a student-athlete, Schuler was a member of the baseball team at Maryville, earning several accolades, including GLVC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in 2024 when the team was ranked at No. 17 nationally, won its first GLVC championship, and made the second of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. He was also named the NSCA Male Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Year for 2023-24.
Schuler is a native of Countryside, Illinois who is skilled in various innovative training methodologies and athlete well-being techniques.
