A McDaniel tradition that's as old as Henry Ford's invention officially made its way into the record books when The Weather Channel named McDaniel the No. 6 tailgating school in the nation. That's right. Our famous drive-in stadium and passionate fans put McDaniel among six Division I universities in a "Top Tailgaters" show that The Weather Channel originally aired in 2011.
Southern Living magazine endorsed that distinction in 2012 by naming McDaniel one of the top 20 tailgaters in the U.S.
And no wonder. Forget those parking lot parties. Here, home game days find fans with their cars, pick-up trucks, sofas, tents, grills, gourmet cuisine and Green Terror gear peppering the hillside around Rembert Field at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium from the early morning right on through the end of the game.
From the Greek letters of sororities and fraternities painted on the natural grass bowl to aromas and cheers distinctly McDaniel, tailgating and Green Terror football go together like the hot dogs and burgers fans munch as they watch the game from their tailgating perches.
Gill Stadium offers seating and facilities for tailgaters and other fans alike. There's no charge to walk in to the stadium and enjoy the game, but there is a $20 parking fee per car or truck if you drive into the stadium.
A Pregame Celebration
Each McDaniel home game starts with the long-standing tradition of a coin toss by a guest honoree. An alum or other distinguished member of the college community is selected to participate in the pregame ceremony in which he or she is honored with a brunch, introduced to the crowd and then escorted to midfield to toss the coin before kickoff.
Homecoming
Homecoming on the Hill, with all of its festivities, is held one home game weekend every autumn. However, at any and every home game, you'll find alumni and friends gathering for spontaneous reunions or simply to enjoy tailgating and a Green Terror gridiron contest.
All We Ask In Return
Please remain respectful of those around you and employ common sense. Keep your pets leashed and clean up after them, obey all traffic signs and Maryland laws pertinent to the consumption of alcohol and remove your car from the stadium no later than 45 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
