GREENWOOD, Ind. - The McDaniel College volleyball team had four players named to the Academic All-District® Volleyball Team selected by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.
Senior Kailey Young, junior Reese Beck, and sophomores Cassy Poteet and Stephanie Buttons each earned their first career Academic All-District® honor.
The Academic All-America® program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
- Must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
- Must have competed in at least 90 percent of team games played OR have started at least 66 percent of the total number of team games played.
Young is a Health Sciences major with a 3.64 GPA. She led the team with a career-high 235 kills this season for an average of 2.61 per set while finishing second with 56.0 blocks. She played in and started 25 of the team's 26 matches while tying for the team lead in sets played, appearing in 90 of the team's 93. She finished her career with 563 kills and 103.0 blocks and was a three-time Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll selection.
Beck is a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry and a 3.76 GPA. She finished third on the team with a career-high 183 digs while ranking fourth with 33 service aces. She was one of three players to play in all 26 matches while totaling 83 sets played and making six starts. She is also a two-time Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll selection.
Poteet is also a Biology major who is minoring in Education and American Sign Language with a 3.69 GPA. She finished second on the team with a career-high 289 assists for a 3.52 per set average while ranking third with 39 service aces. She played in all 26 matches and totaled 83 sets played while making her first career start in a 3-0 win versus Penn College on September 13. She was also named to the Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll for the first time.
Buttons is a Criminal Justice and Political Science double major with a 3.65 GPA. She finished second on the team with 197 digs and fourth with 159 kills. She also totaled 20 assists, 19 service aces, and 16.0 blocks. She was the only player to start all 26 of the team's matches and was named to the Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll for the first time as well.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
