THE REST OF THE STORY
• Southwestern opened the scoring when Tyler Johnson scored off a pass from Cody Foster just 34 seconds into the game. Eric Manfredonia (Ramsey, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) responded just over three minutes later to knot the game at 1-all off a feed from Nick DeLoriers in a man-up opportunity. Matt Caldwell capitalized for a man-up goal of his own at the 7:06 mark before Liam DeLorenzo (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) even the score once again with 5:45 left in the quarter. Less than a minute later, the Pirates took the lead back off a goal from Cody Foster. Jason Fritz found Vitale with 18 seconds left in the opening stanza to tie it for the third time.
• Goals from Foster and Justin Macha in the first 3:08 of the second quarter were the only scores in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 5-3 edge.
• Dylan Vitale needed just one minute in the third quarter to finish a solo run and close the deficit to one. Southwestern, however, reeled off three straight goals by three different playes to take an 8-4 led with 3:43 remaining. Fritz and Dom Calderoni (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) bookended an Axel Aymond tally – all in the final 74 seconds of the period – to make it a 9-6 game after three quarters.
• Fritz scored his second with 11:28 remaining in the fourth quarter before Nick Wingo (Westminster, Md./Westminster) found DeLoriers to make it a 9-8 game with 7:51 on the clock. Less than a minute later, Jack Carolan found a cutting Nick Doxey in front of the net to extend the Southwestern lead once again. With 1:36 remaining and McDaniel playing on its third man-up opportunity of the game, DeLorenzo dished the ball to Patrick Fegan (Edgewater, Md./South River), who capitalized to make it an 11-10 game. After a Pirate turnover in their offensive end, McDaniel raced up field and called a timeout with 42.6 seconds remaining. With the clock winding inside 10 seconds, Southwestern checked the ball out. After a scramble in front of the net, the ball made its way out to Fritz, who golfed it passed the goalie with 2.5 ticks showing to send the game into overtime.
• Neither team could capitalize on their first possession of the extra session but the Pirates' second chance ended when Jack Doloszycki passed it to Caldwell for the game-winner.
