Payne tallies two goals, one assist in win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel had the final say in a back-and-forth battle, topping Frostburg 6-5 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Jared Payne (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) led the Green Terror (3-2) with two goals and an assist, including the game-winner with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.

Adam Gross and Keegan Colegrove paced the Bobcats (2-3) with two goals and an assist each.

Payne opened the scoring, taking a feed from Jackson Reilly (Churchton, Md./Southern) and finishing for a 1-0 lead just 1:09 into the contest.

Jackson Kratovil (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) ripped an unassisted marker for a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Goss got Frostburg on the board with 10:38 showing in the second quarter before Reilly responded 40 seconds left, finishing a quick pass from Bryce Brookhart (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) to reestablish the two-goal lead.

A Paul Ruppert man-up tally from Goss with 7:32 showing trimmed the margin to 3-2 before Colegrove drew the visitors even with 49 ticks remaining in the half.

Michael Long (Hampstead, Md./Boys' Latin School of Maryland) gave the hosts the lead back at the break, however, juking his defender and ripping a shot from the right corner of the box for a 4-3 advantage.

Colegrove drew the game even just 54 seconds into the second half before Payne found Brookhart on a change and the sophomore charged down the middle of the field for a 5-4 edge with 13:10 showing.

Goss finished low just 48 seconds later to knot the game once again.

Payne, however, had the final say. He dodged his defender and zipped a shot from 10 yards out for the game-winner.

Joey Conklin (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Brooks and Marshall finished solo runs 21 seconds apart to even the game at 6-all with 5:07 remaining in the quarter. Jakob Katzen (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) backstopped the unit with six saves, a ground ball and caused turnover.

McDaniel returns to action at Albright on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
