Katzen makes 14 saves to open CC slate with win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel's defense limited Haverford to three goals and the offense used a four-goal second quarter to notch a 7-3 win in the Centennial Conference men's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.

Jakob Katzen (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) led the Green Terror (6-3, 1-0 CC) with 14 saves in goal, including eight in a fourth quarter in which the Fords (3-4, 0-1 CC) fired off 20 shots.

Dylan Slack made eight saves at the other end of the field to lead Haverford.

After Ben Frost staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead just 62 seconds into the game, Jared Payne (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) ripped a shot from the right wing to tie the game at the 11:09 mark.

Tied after the first 15 minutes, Payne ripped another solo run to put the hosts up 2-1 with 9:59 showing in the second quarter.

Michael Long (Hampstead, Md./Boys' Latin School of Maryland) bounced one in just over a minute later before Micah Brooks (Woolford, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) ripped a laser late in a shot clock with 4:31 to play for a 4-1 lead.

Jackson Reilly (Churchton, Md./Southern) zipped a long-range shot for a man-up marker in the final 30 seconds of the first half.

Jackson Kratovil (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) stretched the lead to 6-1 with 12:23 to play in the third quarter before the Fords snapped a 36-minute, 8-second scoring drought with an Isaac Krier tally.

Patrick Girard trimmed the deficit to three nearly two minutes into the fourth quarter at the beginning of an onslaught of fourth-quarter attack by Haverford.

After a three-minute, nine-shot attack came up empty for the Fords, Brooks stretched the lead to four with a tough-angle shot with just 3:40 to play.

The defense kept Haverford off balance and Katzen made four of his saves in the waning minutes to earn the the Green Terror a win in its conference opener for the first time since 2003.

McDaniel returns to action at No. 11 Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
