Monzo scores four times

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore answered last in a see-saw fourth quarter to edge McDaniel 12-11 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Zach Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored four of the season-high 11 goals for the Green Terror (2-10, 0-5 CC), who dropped its third straight one-goal game.

Matt Johnson paced the Garnet (7-4, 2-2 CC) with four goals, including the game-winning tally with 7:05 to play.

Trailing 9-4 late in the second quarter, Jason Lawrence (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored just two seconds before the intermission to cut the deficit to four and give the visitors momentum heading to the second half.

Timothy McNichol (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Troy Becker (Yardley, Pa./Notre Dame) finished solo runs 1 minute, 39 seconds apart to trim the deficit to 9-7 with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Lawrence completed a hat trick with 1:02 showing to trim the margin to one before McNichol finished a pass from Quinn Lykens (Baltimore, Md./Towson) with 15 ticks remaining to make it a 9-all game heading to the final 15 minutes.

Swarthmore and Johnson needed just 19 seconds into the fourth quarter to go back in front by one.

Monzo, however, answered with his third of the day to once again draw McDaniel even with 13:06 to play.

Johnson answered again with 11:53 on the clock before Monzo once again responded to make it an 11-all game with 9:41 to play.

Johnson had the final say in the see-saw affair, finishing a solo run midway through the period.

Monzo scored twice in the game's first 3:25 to stake the Green Terror to a 2-0 lead before Will Black got the Garnet on the board with 10:47 remaining.

Goals from Lawrence and Jared Payne (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) gave McDaniel a 4-1 lead with 5:46 on the first-quarter clock.

Cam Marsh found the back of the net with 4:19 to play, sparking an 8-0 run that spanned the next 16 minutes, 15 seconds.

The Green Terror finished with a 44-27 advantage in shots.

Will Kroppe (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) led the defense with five caused turnovers with Robert Breed (Medway, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and Zach Bicho (Millstone, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) had six ground balls each. Bicho won 12 of 23 faceoffs.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
