Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – McDaniel used a late rally to stave off a Johns Hopkins comeback and notch a 3-2 victory in the Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball semifinals on Saturday.
Kloe Martin (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) knocked down 15 kills to pace the Green Terror (20-7) to victory. With the win, fourth-seeded McDaniel advances to Sunday's championship match. It will be the program's first appearance in the title tilt since 2007. The win also gives the Green Terror its first 20-win season since 1999 – the last time the team won a conference title.
Elizabeth Wuerstle led the top-seeded Blue Jays (12-11) with 20 kills.
Wuerstle gave Johns Hopkins a 1-0 lead in the final set before a Madeline Rose (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor School) knocked down a kill to start a 4-0 counter.
Kills from Wuerstle and Erica Johnston closed the deficit to 4-3.
After Rose and Johnston traded points, the Green Terror scored three straight points to take an 8-4 lead as the teams changed sides.
The teams traded points before a Johnston kill and Kristi Rhead ace closed the deficit to 10-8.
A Rose ace gave McDaniel a 14-10 lead. After an error gave the Blue Jays hope, Lexi Corral (Tucson, Ariz./Gaithersburg [Md.]) knocked down her ninth kill of the match to send McDaniel to the title match.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before a Rose kill made it a 4-2 score.
After a ball-handling error, Johnston and Corral traded kills. Martin tied the game with her first kill of the match.
Tied at 6-all, a ball-handling error and Martin ace gave McDaniel the lead for good.
The Green Terror extended the lead as large as six on three occasions, including 22-16. Out of a timeout, Lauren Wells (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) knocked down back-to-back kills before Ali Cox and Teryn Rath (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) traded kills for the 25-17 final margin.
McDaniel jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Johns Hopkins countered with five of the next seven points to take a 6-3 advantage.
Three straight Martin kills evened the score at 6-all.
Tied at 10-all, another Martin kill sparked a 4-0 stretch to open up a 14-10 advantage en route to a 25-14 victory.
Tied at 3-all in the third set, four straight Blue Jay points gave the top seed a 7-3 edge.
The lead stretched to 10-4 on a Cox kill before a Martin kill helped close the deficit 11-7.
Six straight Johns Hopkins points opened up a 17-7 lead en route to a 25-18 win.
Trailing 7-5 early in the fourth set, Cox knocked down back-to-back kills to spark an 8-0 run that gave the Blue Jays a 13-7 lead en route to a 25-12 win to force the deciding set.
Rose added 10 kills and four blocks while Colette Kellen (Olney, Md./Covenant Life) chipped in 24 assists. Maddie Moyer (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood), Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and Genna Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) led the defense with 12 digs each.
Match time on Sunday is 1 p.m. The Green Terror will face the winner of the second semifinal between Haverford and Swarthmore for the title.
