Woglom opens season with hat trick

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern scored three straight second-half goals to turn a 4-all deadlock into a 7-4 lead en route to a 9-7 victory over McDaniel in the men's lacrosse season opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Pat Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) led the Green Terror (0-1) with three goals while Skippy Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) added a pair of markers.

Grant Ferguson tallied three times for the Eagles (1-0), including starting the game-winning 3-0 run.

After Woglom finished from Matt Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) with a man-up tally to knot the game at 4-all with 12:35 to play in the third quarter, Ferguson put the hosts back in front 1:17 later.

Eric Waibel stretched the lead to 6-4 after three quarters before Shawn Farmer scored 16 seconds into the final period for a 7-4 lead.

Woglom finished a feed from Jason Lawrence (Fallston, Md./Fallston) nearly two minutes later before Clary scored unassisted to draw McDaniel within one with 8:36 showing.

Ferguson and Woglom traded markers seven seconds apart to keep it a one-goal margin with 6:53 to play before Matt Soldano set the final margin with 2:18 on the clock.

Clary finished a solo run to open the scoring 1:10 into the game but Zac Ivy had a hand in the next two goals to give Eastern a 2-1 advantage.

Ivy scored unassisted 56 seconds after Clary before hitting Ferguson with 5:44 remaining in the opening period for a 2-1 lead.

Lawrence knotted the game with 1:45 on the first-quarter clock before Ivy converted a man-up opportunity to reestablish the one-goal lead for his Eagle

Pat Bivons (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) found the back of the net off the first of two Jimmy Gibbons (Galesville, Md./Southern) assists with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter before Waibel tallied unassisted 1:09 later for a 4-3 halftime edge.

Ryan Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) went 11-for-19 on faceoffs for the Green Terror, picking up a tema-high seven ground balls. Gibbons added five ground balls while Ryan Hennessy (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) chipped in four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

McDaniel finished with a slim 26-25 advantage in shots while Eastern held a 35-32 edge in ground balls.

The Green Terror returns to action at Mary Washington on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
