Duke scores three

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – McDaniel scored the game's final four goals to secure a 10-4 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over Swarthmore in men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) led the attack with three goals and an assist for the Green Terror (9-6, 5-3 CC), who secured a spot in next weekend's CC tournament with the win. McDaniel will play top-seeded and host Washington (Md.) in one semifinal on Friday. Gettysburg and Dickinson will meet in the day's other semifinal with the winners meeting in the title game on Sunday. Game times will be announced on Monday after the pre-championship conference call.

Four different players scored for the Garnet (4-10, 2-6 CC), who pulled within 6-4 with 9:50 to play in the third quarter but could get no closer.

After Zach Belden staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead just 1:32 into the game, Duke finished a solo run with 41 ticks remaining in the first quarter to knot the game.

Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) found Michael Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) with 12:41 to play in the second quarter for a 2-1 advantage but Ian Lukaszewicz knotted the game once again 1:06 later before Steve Selverian put the hosts back on top by one with 8:13 on the clock.

DiBernardo finished a feed from Duke to knot the game at 3-all with 7:15 remaining before Duke found the back of the net off a pass from Matt Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) 1:03 later that gave McDaniel the lead for good.

A Pat Bivons (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield)-to-Woglom connection with 10 seconds remaining in the period stretched the lead to 5-3 at the break before Dupras hit a man-up tally from DiBernardo 1:10 into the second half.

Max Hubbard closed the deficit to two exactly four minutes later before Duke finished an Alec Schunk (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) feed directly off the ensuing faceoff to reestablish the three-goal edge.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) finished from Alex Creech (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) with 1:50 remaining in the quarter.

A Skippy Clarry (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) solo run and Dupras-to-Rickels marker 4:51 apart set the final margin with 9:03 to play in the fourth period.

Brad Motley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made nine saves in goal for the Green Terror, who finished with a 36-32 advantage in shots. Ryan Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) won 12 of his 17 faceoffs and picked up a team-high five ground balls.
