Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Washington (Md.) scored seven straight goals to turn a five-goal deficit into a 10-9 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.
DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) and Ben Yancheski (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the Green Terror (4-4, 0-1 CC) with two goals and an assist each.
Grant Hughes paced the Shoremen (4-2, 1-0 CC) with three goals while Hunter Nowicki notched a goal and four assists.
McDaniel built a 7-1 lead through the game's first 22:22 before two Hughes goals cut the deficit to 7-3 at the break.
Michael Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) finished a feed from Matt Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) just 1:12 into the third quarter to stretch the lead to 8-3 before Washington started its rally.
Patrick Coyle found JD Campbell just 1:04 later and Nowicki hit Dominic Serio with 11:09 to play, closing the deficit to 8-5.
Unassisted tallies from Nowicki and Serio just 1:12 apart pulled the visitors within one with 5:47 to play and a Nowick-to-Coyle connection knotted the game 1:09 later.
Nowicki hit Campbell with 13:12 to play in the fourth quarter and then Campbell dished to Coyle just 1:02 later for a 10-8 lead.
With 6:27 to play, JS Duke (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) finished a Rickels assist on the break to close the deficit to one.
McDaniel had chances to tie down the stretch, including a Yancheski pipe with 51 seconds left, but could not get the equalizer.
Rickels staked his team to a 1-0 lead at the 10:00 mark of the first quarter before Hughes converted from Adam Smith in the extra-man to tie the game with 6:59 to play.
Yancheski and Dupras tallied 33 seconds apart to give the Green Terror a 3-1 lead after one quarter.
A Woglom solo run and Yancheski-to-Rickels marker stretched the lead to 5-1 in the first five minutes of the second quarter.
Duke hit Yancheski in the man-up with 8:46 to play and Nick DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall), who missed the first seven games of the season with injury, scored his first goal of the season on the man-up 1:08 later for a 7-1 lead.
Washington finished with a 35-32 edge in shots, including outshooting its hosts 22-10 in the decisive second half. Micahel Trapp won 14 of 21 faceoffs for the Shoremen, who won 14 of 23 as a team.
Nelson Hannahs (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) led the defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls.
The Green Terror returns to action at Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
