Fords reel off four straight and cruise to win
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Zack Cohen had two goals
and an assist to lead Haverford to a 9-6 victory over McDaniel in
Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on
Saturday.
With the score deadlocked at 3-all, the Fords (8-5, 4-3 CC)
reeled off four straight goals before the defenses took over in the
second half, which saw a combined four goals in the final 30
minutes.
William Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and
Michael Young (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) each
scored twice for the Green Terror (7-6, 4-3 CC), who moved to the
verge of its second consecutive conference postseason appearance
despite the loss.
Both Haverford and McDaniel are in the driver's seat in
the playoff race with one game to play. A win in next
Saturday's finale secures a spot while a loss would come down
to tiebreakers, which favor both the Fords and Green Terror in most
scenarios.
Andrew Kim staked Haverford to a 1-0 lead just
58 seconds into the game before TJ Willoughby (Sykesville,
Md./Century) and Young scored fewer than two minutes apart
to give McDaniel a 2-1 advantage with 11:15 showing in the first
period.
Goals from Max Hjelm and Phillip
Valliant three minutes apart swung the one-goal advantage
to Haverford before Young evened the game with 3:40 to play in the
opening period.
Myles Monaghan started a four-goal flurry with
1:52 showing that spanned the remainder of the period and first
8:38 of the second quarter.
Monaghan also capped the stretch before Clary made it 7-4 at the
break, tallying unassisted with 2:38 on the clock.
Clary accounted for the only third-quarter goal, finishing a
DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of
Maryland) feed at the 8:39 mark.
Vallient snapped a 32-minute, 2-second scoring drought for the
Fords to make it an 8-5 game before Cohen gave the hosts a
four-goal cushion with 2:14 on the clock.
Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) set
the final margin with 42 seconds showing.
Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) went 13-for-18 at the faceoff X for the Green
Terror and picked up 11 ground balls.
McDaniel returns to action in the regular season finale at home
against Dickinson on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
