Shoremen notch 9-8 win over McDaniel with two goals in final 1:50

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Shane Kaski tallied both of his goals in the final 1:50 of regulation to lead Washington (Md.) to a 9-8 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) scored three times to lead the Green Terror (3-4, 0-1 CC), who scored three straight goals to take an 8-7 lead but dropped its ninth straight game to the Shoremen (3-3, 1-1 CC), including back-to-back one-goal losses.

Trailing by a goal on Gibbs Preston's (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) man-up tally with 3:40 on the clock, Kaski finished a solo run with 1:50 showing to even the game.

With 13 ticks remaining, Kaski took a pass from Doug Herdegen and converted for the game-winner.

McDaniel won the ensuing faceoff but – out of a timeout with four seconds on the clock – Rickel's potential game-tying shot would not have crossed the goal line in time and Washington notched the sixth one-goal victory in seven CC games this season.

Billy Stafford found Patrick Coyle 3:58 into the game before Coyle returned the favor nearly three minutes later for an early 2-0 lead.

Rickels pulled the visitors within 2-1 at the 7:02 mark before Dominic Serio finished a pass from Herdegen – the first of Herdengen's four points on the day – to stretch the lead back to two at the end of the first quarter.

Nicholas DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) and Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) evened the game with unassisted tallies in the first 7:07 of the second.

Herdegen and DiBernardo exchanged markers in the final 39 seconds of the first half to knot the score at 4-all going to the break.

After Josh Perlow and Rickels exchanged goals 16 seconds apart in the third quarter, neither team tallied for nearly 14 minutes until Dave Lundquist found the back of the next 1:11 into the fourth for a 6-5 edge.

Herdegen finished a Lundquist feed 35 seconds later for a 7-5 advantage.

Michael Young (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) made it a one-goal contest with 12:37 to play before Rickels completed his hat trick midway through the period, tying the game.

Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) won 13 of 20 faceoffs and picked up four ground balls for the Green Terror, who outshot Washington 47-29 in the game.

McDaniel returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
