Mary Washington uses seven-goal second quarter to key 10-9
win
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Mark Bowler scored
three goals to lead Mary Washington to a 10-9 victory over McDaniel
in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
DJ Rickels (Forest Hill, Md./Boys Latin School of
Maryland) scored four goals for the Green Terror (1-3),
including three in a 7-0 second half.
Kohl Meyer and Ryan Motyka
netted two goals apiece for the Eagles (2-3), who used a seven-goal
run in the second quarter to build a 10-2 halftime advantage.
In addition to the 7-0 advantage in goals during the second
half, McDaniel also outshot Mary Washington 32-1 over the final 30
minutes but the rally fell just short.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead after Gibbs Preston (Baltimore,
Md./McDonogh) tallied with 1:14 remaining in the first
quarter, Meyer converted the Eagles' lone man-up opportunity
1:17 into the second period.
Bowler stretched the lead to 5-2 with 9:06 to play in the
quarter before taking the ensuing faceoff straight to goal eight
seconds later.
Seven seconds later, Motyka took the next faceoff to goal to cap
a three-goal flurry in 15 seconds.
Harry Snyder stretched the lead to 8-2 off a
Meyer feed with 4:37 on the clock before Bowler made it 9-2 with
1:14 showing.
Sean Dacey needed 14 seconds to pick up the
ground ball off the next faceoff and find the back of the net for
an eight-goal lead at the break.
Nicholas DiBernard (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall)
finished a Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna
Park) feed midway through the third quarter before
William Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) trimmed
the deficit to 10-4 with 1:07 to play in the period.
A DiBernardo man-up goal from Preston with 9:29 to play sparked
a five-goal fourth quarter that included three Rickels man-up
tallies.
Zach Woods (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's)
finished the final of Preston's three assists with 8:52 on
the clock before Rickels scored from the same spot on the field
three times in the final 5:38.
The first two came off Kyle Hadden (Moorestown,
N.J./Moorestown) passes before the final came off a
TJ Willoughby (Sykesville, Md./Century) feed with
51.8 seconds showing.
Matt Dean (Glen Burnie, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) won his sixth and final faceoff before the Green
Terror called timeout with 39.8 seconds to play.
After a second McDaniel timeout with 10.7 seconds on the clock,
the offense got off a shot but Matt Prin made his
15th save of the contest to preserve the win.
Motyka set the tone early, winning the game's first
faceoff and taking it straight to the cage for a 1-0 lead eight
seconds into the game.
Johnny Hink stretched the lead to 2-0 off a
Motyka pass before Rickels trimmed the deficit in half with 6:54 to
play in the first quarter.
Meyer extended the lead back to two 1:32 later.
McDaniel returns to action at home against New England College
on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
