WESTMINSTER, Md. – Mike Hatton (Corning,
N.Y./Corning East) recorded a career-high five goals to go
with one assist, leading McDaniel to a 10-7 victory over Widener in
non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Kenny McHugh (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall)
notched a career-best 21 saves in goal for the Green Terror (2-0),
who were outshot 44-29 in the game. The 21 stops were the most
saves for a McDaniel keeper since Chuck Nolan made a program-record
34 stops against Hampden-Sydney on Mar. 16, 1983.
Johnny Casey led the Pride (0-3) with three
goals.
Trailing 7-6 after Mike Holtz gave Widener the
lead 2:39 into the final quarter, the Green Terror ripped off the
game's final four goals to remain perfect on the young
season.
In a man-up situation, Hatton found Gibbs Preston
(Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) for the junior's
team-leading seventh tally of the season to knot the game with
10:17 to play.
Just 47 seconds later, Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford,
Pa./Wilminton Friends School) flipped the ball to Hatton,
who found the lower-left corner of the net to give McDaniel a
one-goal edge.
Kyle Hadden (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) capped
the 1-minute, 49-second flurry with his second coast-to-coast goal
to stretch the advantage to two.
Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) tacked on an
insurance goal in a wide-open net in the game's final minute
to help the Green Terror finish 3-for-4 on extra-man
opportunities.
After Warner staked McDaniel to an early 1-0 lead, Shawn
DeHaven and Cory Malampy scored 1 minute,
46 seconds apart to turn the one-goal deficit into a one-goal
advantage.
A Hatton man-up tally late in the first quarter and Hadden goal
midway through the second gave the Green Terror a 3-2 lead at
halftime.
Hatton quickly stretched the lead to 4-2, finishing a Preston feed
1:18 into the third quarter but Widener scored the next three to
take a 5-2 lead. Casey had the final two markers in the
run.
Hatton evened the game at 5-all with a solo marker before a Casey
extra-man tally once again gave the Pride a one-goal
advantage.
Hatton once again knotted the score, hitting with 4.3 seconds
remaining in the quarter off a Warner feed.
Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) went
8-for-15 on faceoffs and picked up three ground balls.
Matt
Mummert (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) added five ground balls
and a caused turnover while Hadden had two ground balls and two
caused turnovers to go with his two goals.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Virginia Wesleyan on
Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
