WESTMINSTER, Pa. – Matt Moreton scored
the first and last goal for No. 9 Washington (Md.), propelling his
squad to a 9-8 overtime Centennial Conference (CC) men's
lacrosse victory at McDaniel on Saturday.
Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) tallied
two goals and two assists to pace the Green Terror (5-2, 0-1 CC),
who played its third overtime in the last four
outings.
Doug Herdegen paced the Shoremen (7-1, 2-0 CC),
who notched their eighth consecutive victory over McDaniel –
the third by one during the span.
Trailing 8-7 after Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning
East) capped a four-goal Green Terror flurry with
back-to-back solo runs, Herdegen completed his hat trick with 2:24
remaining in regulation.
Despite controlling possession for the final 1:45, the Shoremen
could not convert before the extra session.
After McDaniel killed its fifth penalty of the game early in the
first overtime period, Moreton lasered a shot from the left wing
for the game-winner just 1:32 into the extra session.
Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) staked the
Green Terror to a 1-0 lead 57 seconds into the game before Moreton
evened the game 46 seconds later.
At the 12-minute mark, Josh Perlow finished a
Jimmy Kielek feed to give Washington a 2-1
lead.
With 10:10 showing in the first period, Deane Mellor
(Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilminton Friends School) converted a
Preston assist to even the game once again.
Back-to-back Herdegen tallies gave the Shoremen a 4-2 advantage
after the first quarter before Kielek stretched the lead to three
with 9:33 remaining in the second period.
Just 26 seconds into the second half, Shane Kaski
made it a four-goal lead before the Green Terror reeled off six of
the game's next seven tallies.
Preston and Jed Barnes (Severna Park, Md./Severna
Park) combined for markers 42 seconds apart.
With 12:51 to play, Barnes found Preston before Preston returned
the favor at the 11:27 mark.
A Perlow man-up goal momentarily stretched the lead back to three
with 7:13 to play before a DJ Rickels (Forest Hill,
Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland) converted a man-up
tally of his own in the final minute of the third
quarter.
Preston trimmed the deficit to one with 11:17 to play and Hatton
knotted the game a minute later before Hatton made it an 8-7 lead
with 6:57 on the clock.
Washington finished with a 40-32 advantage in shots and
Thayer Damm won 13 of 20 faceoffs.
