FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Brian Deal scored
with 42 seconds remaining in the first overtime to propel Mary
Washington to an 8-7 victory over McDaniel in non-conference
men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) led the
Green Terror (3-1) with a natural hat trick, turning a 6-4 deficit
midway through the third period into a 7-6 advantage with fewer
than four minutes to play in regulation. He also added one
assist.
Brent Fisk led the Eagles (4-2) with three goals
while Charlie White tallied two goals and two
assists.
Trailing, Matthew Daley (Wilmington, Del./A.I.
Dupont) found Preston with 7:58 remaining in the third
period to pull the visitors within one.
With 7:39 showing in the fourth quarter, Preston found the back of
the net with an unassisted marker to knot the game before finishing
a second solo run 3 minutes, 40 seconds later to give McDaniel a
late lead.
Kohl Meyer forced overtime with just five seconds
remaining in regulation before Deal finished a White helper for the
win.
Fisk staked Mary Washington to a 1-0 lead 1:40 into the game before
Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and
Deane Mellor (Chadds Ford, Pa./Wilminton Friends
School) gave the Green Terror a 2-1 lead at the end of the
period.
Three straight Eagle goals over the first 8:28 of the second
quarter gave the hosts a 4-2 lead before Bill Warner
(Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) and Hatton booked Fisk's
third goal to make it a 5-4 game at the intermission.
White stretched the lead to 6-4 three minutes into the third
quarter before Preston's three straight goals gave McDaniel
the lead again.
Mary Washington finished with a 32-23advantage in shots, including
12-5 in the fourth quarter but the Green Terror picked up 25 ground
balls to the Eagles' 19.
McDaniel returns to action against Connecticut College at Haverford
on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
