Volleyball Falls to Stevenson, Marymount in Home Tri-Match

WESTMINSTER, Md. - First-year Annika Cortez totaled 17 kills and 10 digs as the McDaniel College volleyball team dropped matches against Stevenson and Marymount on Saturday inside Gill Gymnasium.

The Green Terror (6-3) were limited to just 54 kills over seven sets and hampered by 40 attack errors.

Cortez posted a .250 hitting percentage while sophomore Mariya Carson added 13 kills and senior Abigayle Bowley had 12. Bowley hit .333 and had four blocks.

Stevenson 3, McDaniel 1 (25-21, 25-15, 17-25, 25-11)

McDaniel finished with 35 kills and a .150 hitting percentage compared to 56 kills and a .276 percentage for the Mustangs.

Cortez led the Green Terror with 10 kills, hitting .346 and adding five digs. Bowley had nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage with three block assists. Junior Cassy Poteet recorded a team-high 16 assists and added three service aces while junior Kaylee Comstock had 12 assists and five digs.

McDaniel tied the set at 16-16 on a kill by sophomore Kaitlyn Saidat kill and 17-17 on a Carson kill before the Mustangs scored the next three points to take a 20-17 advantage. The Green Terror pulled within one at 21-20, but the Mustangs scored four of the final five points to win 25-21.

The second set saw McDaniel score seven-straight points with Poteet recording three aces while Cortez had two kills and Saidat one, but a kill by the Mustangs gave them a two-set lead, 25-15.

The Green Terror took an early lead in the third set, winning seven of the first eight points and building a 5-0 lead. Cortez and Comstock easch had kills during the opening stretch before senior Reese Beck closed the set with a service ace.

McDaniel fell behind 7-0 in the fourth set before falling, 25-11.

Marymount 3, McDaniel 0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-18)

The Green Terror matched the Saints with seven total blocks and had five service aces, but the visitors totaled 51 digs.

Cortez led the team with seven kills, five digs, and one service ace while Carson added six kills, two digs, and two block assists. Poteet had 10 assists while junior Stephanie Buttons led the team with seven digs.

McDaniel was limited to 19 kills and a -.022 hitting percentage, while the Saints notched 41 kills and a .295 hitting percentage.

The Saints pulled away in the first set and despite a late surge, the Green Terror could not recover from a 19-7 deficit.

Marymount led from start to finish in the second, leading 10-2 and 18-4 before scoring four consecutive points to take a two-set lead.

The third set was tied at 3-3 before the Saints scored five-straight points and never let their lead slip below two the rest of the way. Leading 9-7, the visitors scored four in-a-row and went on to seal the sweep.

McDaniel hosts Penn State Berks on Tuesday in its seventh home match out of 10 this season. First serve is at 7 p.m.
