McDaniel, Six Student-Athletes Honored by IWLCA for Academics

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - On Wednesday, the McDaniel College women's lacrosse team was honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an Academic Honor Squad while six student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll.

To qualify as an IWLCA Academic Squad, a team must have posted a 3.2 or higher team grade-point average (GPA) for the academic year.

McDaniel has earned the honor for 11 consecutive years dating back to 2014. An Academic Honor Squad was not recognized in 2020 because of COVID. The team has been honored 15 times in the 16-year history of the award which was first given out in 2009.

Seniors Allie Ballard and Sadie Bowman, juniors Caleigh Kohr, Mia McElwee, Kat Thayer and Addison Utterback were each named to the to the Academic Honor Roll which recognizes junior, senior or graduate students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater.

Ballard was honored for the second-straight year. She graduated summa cum laude with a 3.938 GPA and a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and minors in Political Science and History. A College Scholar, National Security Fellow, and member of Chi Alpha Sigma, she was a three-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection who played in 17 games with seven starts and seven caused turnovers, all career highs.

Bowman graduated cum laude with a 3.504 GPA and a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in Biology. A College Scholar who also received departmental honors in Environmental Studies and the Michael J. Marks '13 Memorial Award. She was a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and a three-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection who played in 17 games with 15 starts while totaling 18 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.

Kohr is a Psychology major with a minor in Criminal Justice and a 3.648 GPA. A two-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection, she started all 17 games in goal this season, totaling 105 saves and 36 ground balls. She currently ranks 10th on the program's career saves list with 272 in 48 games.

McElwee graduated summa cum laude in May with a 3.951 GPA and a bachelor's degree in Biology. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Chi Alpha Sigma, and Omicron Delta Kappa, she is a two-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection who played in all 17 games last season while making 10 starts and totaling 12 goals, 16 points, 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers, all career highs.

Thayer is a Business Administration major with a 3.653 GPA and is a two-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection. She was named to the All-Centennial Conference Second Team this season after finishing as the team's leader in goals (38), assists (25), points (63), ground balls (38), caused turnovers (25), and draw controls (65).

Utterback is a Marketing major with minors in Art and Entrepreneurship and a 3.540 GPA. A a two-time Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll selection, she started all 17 of the team's games this season while totaling 23 goals, five assists, 28 points, 16 ground balls and five caused turnovers, all career highs. She ranked third on the team in goals and points.
