Maria Samuel posted the first win in program history while freshman
Taylor Mead had three as the McDaniel College women's wrestling team made its debut at the ESU Open on Sunday.
Women's wrestling was announced as the 25th intercollegiate athletic program at McDaniel on Nov. 10, 2023. The Green Terror were the 61st program in Division III, third in the Centennial Conference and first Division III collegiate program in Maryland.
Competing in the fifth bout of the day, Samuel posted the first win in McDaniel women's wrestling history with a win by technical superiority at 145 pounds over Katie Palmer of Gannon, 12-2. Samuel finished 1-2 on the day.
Meanwhile, Mead also competed at 145 pounds and posted a win in her first career match as well. She posted the first fall in program history, defeating Olivia Lapoint of Utica in 1:51.
After falling to Lehigh's Sydney Thompson in the quarterfinals, Mead posted her second fall over Kathryn Vogt-Shields of Sacred Heart in 1:23 and recorded her third win by injury default over East Stroudsburg's Katie Brensinger. Mead fell to Shani Tyson of Frostburg in the consolation quarterfinals, finishing her day with a 3-2 record.
Freshman
Keira Cooper was the third Green Terror to record her first career win as she won by injury default over Olivia Palmer of East Stroudsburg at 131 pounds.

Rowan Titus also made their collegiate debuts for McDaniel on Sunday. Titus had a challenging first career match at 207 pounds, facing Madeline Hodges of Sacred Heart who was ranked sixth nationally in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Preseason Rankings.
The Green Terror return to action on Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Millersville Open hosted by Millersville University beginning at 10 a.m.
