THE SKINNY
McDaniel posted a game-one shutout before Muhlenberg rallied late in the nightcap to forge a split. The Green Terror took the opener 2-0 before the Mules captured game two 8-5 in 10 innings.
THE LEADERS
• Megan Horsey (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor) led McDaniel with four hits on the day, including three in the nightcap.
FOR THE FOES
• Sarah Karmazyn led Muhlenberg with six total hits, recording three in each game.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In the opener, both teams had chances in the first three innings but could not push a run across. Megan Horsey, however, led off the bottom of the fourth with a single into center field. Evie Craig (Valby, Denmark/International School of Hellerup) followed with a single before Horsey moved to third on a fly out to right. After Craig stole second, Kylie Sears (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Horsey to score the game's first run before an Isabella Sylvester (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) poked a ball up the middle to score Craig for a 2-0 lead.
• Krista Waller (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) allowed base runners in each of the last three innings but worked out of it each time for the complete-game shutout.
• In game two, Sabrina Reicharlt was hit by a pitch with one out before moving to second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch. Sara Fallon then blasted a two-run home run to left to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead.
• After a muffed throw allowed Angelina Tyler (Columbia, Md./Howard) to reach in the bottom of the innings, Mattie Whalen (Magnolia, N.J./Sterling) was hit by a pitch. After Horsey singled through the right side to load the bases, a failed pickoff attempt at third scored Tyler and Makayla Calamita (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) walked to reload the bases. A Paytyn Hazelton (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Seminole Ridge) sacrifice fly and Slyvester RBI groundout gave the hosts a 3-2 edge.
• Three errors around three straight hits, including a two-run Kaya Mahy single, turned the 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 Muhlenberg lead in the top of the third.
• A Taylor Routzahn (Frederick, Md./Frederick) sacrifice fly scored Calamita to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.
• Madison Froemel (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork) led off the sixth with a single before giving way to pinch-runner Mandy Butz (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall). After a popup and fielder's choice, Tyler stole second and Whalen drew a walk. Horsey then lined a single into center to score Tyler for a 5-4 lead.
• With two outs in the top of the seventh, Mahy walked. After a single through the right side, a fielding error allowed Mahy to score from second to tie the game.
• Neither team to push the tiebreaking run across until Jane Banahan was placed at second base to open the 10th. An throwing error on a sacrifice made it 6-5 before a Karmazyn double and Dara DiMaiolo punch-hit two-run single set the final margin.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Makayla Calamita had a two-hit game one.
• In addition to Megan Horsey three hits in game two, Isabella Sylvester had two hits.
