Game Two Grand Slam Lifts Gettysburg over Softball in Sweep

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg hit a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the seventh inning of game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of the McDaniel College softball team on Tuesday.

The Green Terror (12-21, 4-10) dropped the opener in extras to the Bullets (18-18, 9-5) on a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Game 1: Gettysburg 6, McDaniel 5 (Eight Innings)

The Bullets struck first on an RBI-groundout in the first inning, but sophomore Cameron Kelly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half on an RBI-single to score sophomore Ally McBride. A fielding error allowed senior Taylor Applefeld to reach base and junior Caitlin Boden to score, giving the Green Terror a 2-1 lead after one.

An RBI-single from the visitors tied the game at 2-2 in the second, but Kelly launched a two-run homer to left center field to put McDaniel back in front in the third, 4-2.  Gettysburg plated two runs in the fifth to again tie the score at 4-4.

The score held until the top of the seventh, when the Bullets took a 5-4 lead on an RBI-single. McBride led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, and Boden drove her in with an RBI-single to tie the game at 5-5, sending the opener to extra innings.

The Bullets scored the placed runner with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to regain the lead, 6-5. Junior Riley Jackson advanced to third on a passed ball, but the tying run was left stranded to give Gettysburg the win, 6-5.

Kelly finished the opener a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate, knocking in three RBIs and scoring a run. McBride had a 3-for-4 day, scoring three runs in the loss. Boden and Applefeld each had an RBI while Boden had two base hits in four at-bats.

Junior Amy Anderson took the loss in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings in relief while allowing a run and recording a strikeout. Kelly threw 6.2 innings as the starter, totaling one strikeout, four walks, three earned runs and six base hits.

Game 2: Gettysburg 9, McDaniel 8

A two-run first inning put the Bullets ahead early. McDaniel countered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly from Kelly that scored senior Ryan Smith, making the score 2-1.

Applefeld tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single; two insurance runs came across in the fourth after senior Morgan Rogers and Smith each hit solo home runs for a 4-2 advantage.

Gettysburg cut the deficit to one after an RBI-double in the fifth, but the Green Terror again answered in the bottom half of the frame after Applefeld scored on a groundout, putting McDaniel ahead 5-3.

A three-run sixth inning grew the Green Terror lead to 8-3. Smith drove in first-year Erin Thayer on an RBI-double, and Boden scored Smith on an RBI-single for a 7-3 lead. Jackson drove in Boden on an RBI-single through the left side to make the score 8-3 after six.

Gettysburg opened the seventh with a two-run single to cut the deficit down to three; down to their final out, the Bullets hit a go-ahead grand slam to take a 9-8 lead, sending the Green Terror down in order to end the game and secure the doubleheader sweep.

Smith had two hits, two RBIs and three runs from the leadoff spot while Jackson had a three-hit day and an RBI. McBride, Boden and Applefeld all had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

First-year Shiloh Wall took the loss in relief, striking out one and allowing an earned run on two hits on 17 pitches. Rogers totaled one strikeout, five walks, eight earned runs and 11 hits in 6.1 innings as the starter.

The Green Terror conclude the regular season at home against Haverford on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 pm from the Softball Park.
