THE SKINNY
McDaniel pitched a game-one shutout before tacking on runs late to complete a sweep of Gettysburg. The Green Terror took the opener 1-0 and added an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.
THE LEADERS
• Makayla Calamita (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) led the Green Terror with five hits on the day, including the game-winning hit in game one and a towering home run in game two.
• Krista Waller (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), the reigning CC Pitcher of the Week, tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits and fanning four.
FOR THE FOES
• Olivia Moser had five hits to pace the Bullets.
• Paige Forry went toe-to-toe in the game one pitching duel, striking out five and allowing just three hits and walking one.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• The lone run of game one came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mattie Whalen (Magnolia, N.J./Sterling) led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before stealing both second and third over the next two at bats. With two outs, Makayla Calamita drove a single up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
• In game two, Olivia Moser led off the second with a single through the right side before a one-out Lauren O'Leary double to the right-field fence staked Gettysburg to a 1-0 lead.
• Back-to-back two-out singles from Julia Smith and Jess Campana in the third made it a 2-0 game.
• Whalen and Megan Horsey (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor) drew back-to-back walks to start the home third. After Calamita reached on a one-out fielding error, Kylie Sears (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) roped a double to the gap to tie the game. A wild pitch allowed Calamita to score from third for a 3-2 lead.
• Julia Schinik drew a pinch-hit walk to start the top of the fourth before Carlie Goldstein blasted a two-out home run to put the Bullets back in front, 4-3.
• Isabella Sylvester (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) poked a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the inning then stole second. After a two-out walk to Evie Craig (Valby, Denmark/International School of Hellerup), she gave way to pinch-runner Olivia Dresser (Valrico, Fla./Newsome), who immediately stole second. Calamita greeted Forry, who she touched for a pair of hits in game one, with a single into center that scored both runners for a 5-4 edge.
• McDnaiel worked out a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth before Whalen led off the home half with a shallow pop up that fell for a hit. After she stole second, Craig singled through the left side with one out to make it 6-4. Calamita followed with a long ball to left to give McDaniel a four-run cushion heading to the seventh. Parker Murphy (Onancock, Va./Nandua) worked around a one-out infield hit in the seventh to pick up her second save of the year with three innings of scoreless relief.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Makayla Calamita had two of the Green Terror's three hits in game one. She then had three knocks in game two.
