THE SKINNY
McDaniel jumped out to early leads in both games to aid in a sweep at The Spring Games. The Green Terror defeated Wheaton (Mass.) 7-6 in the first game before topping Ripon 6-3 in game two.
THE LEADERS
• Megan Horsey (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor) led the Green Terror with five hits on the day, including a 4-for-4 game one.
FOR THE FOES
• Tristan Keller led the Lyons with two hits and four RBIs in the game.
• Lexzie Hassemer had two hits and two RBIs for the Red Hawks.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, Juliet Zito singled with one out in the bottom of the first before Katelyn Barton walked. A two-out Tristan Keller single to left staked Wheaton to a 2-0 lead.
• Madison Froemel (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork) singled up the middle with one out in the top of the second before Colleen Camburn (Waretown, N.J./Southern Regional) doubled to the gap to put runners at second and third. Olivia Dresser (Valrico, Fla./Newsome) beat out an infield single to load the bases for Mattie Whalen (Magnolia, N.J./Sterling), who singled to shallow right to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, Megan Horsey blasted a double to the right-center gap and Evie Craig (Valby, Denmark/International School of Hellerup) poked a double to the opposite gap for two RBIs each and a 5-2 lead.
• A Bryanna Agan double and pair of sacrifices cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.
• Barton and Sofia Knopf had back-to-back one-out doubles in the fourth to make it 5-4 before Paytyn Hazelton (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Seminole Ridge) led off the top of the fifth with a blast to right for a 6-4 edge.
• A hit batter and Keller two-run home run tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
• Whalen walked to lead off the sixth before moving up on a groundout and scoring on a Horsey double.
• Hannah Costa (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) worked around back-to-back singles to lead off the home sixth with a caught stealing and then retired the final five to pick up her first collegiate win in the circle.
• Against Ripon, Whalen walked to lead off the bottom of the first before moving to second on a passed ball, third on an error, and scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
• Kylie Sears (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) and Makayla Calamita (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) had identical singles up the middle to start the second before a Hannah Raygor (Frederick, Md./Seneca Valley) double plated Sears and Hazelton drove in Calamita and Raygor with a single over the first-base bag for a. 4-0 lead.
• Jessica Millard (Easton, Md./Easton) and Whalen were both hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth before a Horsey single and throwing error made it 6-0.
• Three doubles, including a two-run shot from Lexzie Hassemer, made it 6-3 in the top of the fifth.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Evie Craig had two hits in game one.
• Makayla Calamita went 3-for-3 in game two.
• Kattie Hutchison (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) struck out three in five innings of work to earn the win. Parker Murphy (Onacock, Va./Nandua) threw the final two for the save.
• The two victories were career wins No. 325 and 326 for 18th-year head coach Phil Smith, who became the Green Terror's all-time winningest coach. He passed hall of fame coach George Dix, who had 325 in his storied career.
