THE SKINNY STORY
Randolph-Macon, ranked 12th in the latest NFCA Div. III coaches' poll, scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning then stymied a McDaniel comeback attempt to notch a 6-4 win in the opening game of the final day of the Triangle Grand Slam Classic.
THE LEADERS
• Haley Michael (Oldsmar, Fla./East Lake) led the Green Terror with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
• Emily Kain (Sykesville, Md./Century) added two hits, an RBI and run scored.
FOR THE FOES
• Maddie Stone led the Yellow Jackets with two hits and two RBIs.
• Taylor Sanderford added two hits of her own.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Sami Davidson led off the home second with a double to the gap before Ali Celiberti helped her own cause with a double of her own for a 1-0 lead.
• Celiberti reached on an error to start the fourth inning. Taylor Sanderford and Sam Scifres rapped back-to-back knocks to load the bases. A Jessica Pittman sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 game before Brooklyne Carr and Shelby Hill each had run-producing hits for a 4-0 advantage. Maddie Stone followed with a two-run double for a 6-0 advantage.
• Haley Michael led off the top of the fifth with a single to the gap before a Miranda Thompson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) walk. Krista Waller (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) laced a hit to the gap, scoring pinch-runner Melissa Marini (Catonsville, Md./George Washington Carver Center For the Arts and Technology). Emily Kain followed with an RBI single to plate Thompson and make it a 6-2 game. Kain then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. After a Megan Horsey (Elkton, Md./Bohemia Manor) sacrifice fly, a fielder's choice and wild pitch cut the margin to 6-4 but Celiberti got a pair of groundouts to keep it a two-run game.
• McDaniel put runners on in both the sixth and seventh but could not score.
