Box Score 2 CHESTERTOWN, Md. – McDaniel needed nine innings to win game one before taking a run-rule victory to sweep Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Sunday.
The Green Terror (11-13, 5-3 CC) captured the opener 4-3 before plating eight first-inning runs in game two for an 8-0 win.
Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) led the offense with three hits on the day, including the go-winning RBI single in the top of the ninth of game one. Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./South Western) shut down the Shorewomen (8-16, 1-5 CC) in the nightcap, tossing a one-hit shutout.
Regan Horan had a hit in each game for Washington.
Tied at 3-all in the opener, Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) singled up the middle with one out in the ninth.
After a Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) single through the left side, Coyle gave way to Alejandra Mata (Miramar, Fla./Cooper City) as a pinch runner.
Wagner followed with a single back up the middle to score Mata with the go-ahead run before an error allowed the runners to go to second and third.
Milly Kawabata came on in relief and go back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a one-run game.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder), however, worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning for the win.
Three walks and an infield single staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Allyson Meil led off the bottom of the inning with an infield hit before moving to second on a sacrifice.
Another infield single and Maddie Bennett RBI groundout tied the game before a bases-loaded walk to Gabby Edwards gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) led off the second with a double before taking third on a flyout and scoring on a Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) single to tie the game at 2-all.
Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) reached on a two-out error in the third before stealing second and scoring on a Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) single for a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Edwards singled through the right side to lead off the frame before an error on the ensuing sacrifice attempt put runners at the corners and a double steal tied the game.
Scardina, Hishon, Coyle and Wagner all had two hits in the opener.
Scardina led off game two with a single to right before a one-out fielding error and Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) single through the left side staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead.
Another fielding error loaded the bases before a wild pitch stretched the lead to 2-0.
Deichman followed with a walk and Wagner singled to the gap to score Wilkins and Coyle for a 4-0 advantage.
Another walk to Persinger and a two-out free pass to Scardina made it a 5-0 game.
A third fielding error made it 7-0 with runners at the corners before a double steal stretched the lead to eight after one.
Rickrode then went to work, allowing just four base runners. The only hit was a slow roller that Horan just beat to lead off the fifth.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Swarthmore on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
