Coyle records four hits in sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel exploded for 19 hits in game one to key a doubleheader sweep of Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (16-13-1, 9-3 CC) took the opener 14-6 in five innings before running its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) was one of four McDaniel players with four hits on the afternoon, adding an RBI and two runs scored.

Karissa Astrella led the Mules (8-16, 2-6 CC) with two hits, including a home run, in the opener.

After Astrella blasted a two-out home run in the top of the first of game one, Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) led off with a high popup in the wind that bounced off the shortstop's glove for a leadoff single.

Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) followed with a double to right before Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) roped a triple to the fence in the right-center gap for a 2-1 lead.

Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) singled home Hishon before scoring on an Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.

Elise Enslin led off the top of the second with a double to the gap to ignite a six-hit, five-run inning for a 6-4 lead.

A two-out Lewis single through the right side and Hishon double put runners at second and third in the bottom of the frame before Wilkins and Coyle rapped back-to-back singles to tie the game.

After Wagner singled off first base to lead off the third, Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) blasted her fourth home run of the week for an 8-6 lead.

A one-out Coyle single and two-out knocks up the middle from Wagner and Persinger stretched the lead to 9-6 in the fourth.

After a fielding error to lead off the fifth, Hishon roped a long home run for an 11-6 lead and her third extra-base hit of the game.

After singles from Wilkins and Coyle and a wild pitch, Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) singled to shallow right-center to score both runners for a 13-6 advantage.

After a fielder's choice and walk, a ball through the infield scored pinch-runner Alejandra Mata (Miramar, Fla./Cooper City) with the game-ending run.

Hishon, Wilkins and Coyle all had three hits in game one while Deichman, Wagner and Persinger had two hits. Hishon added four RBIs while Persinger had three.

Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) pitched four innings of relief and allowed just one base runner over the final three frames with five strikeouts to pick up the win.

In game two, Scardina led off the third with an infield single but a fielding error allowed her to take second. After she moved to third on a sacrifice, she was able to score on a wild pitch for the game's lone run.

McDaniel had runners on base in every inning, including runners at third in each of the final three frames, but could not add on.

Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) limited Muhlenberg to three hits and walked two whiel striking out five for the complete-game shutout, improving to 7-2 in the circle.

Deichman and Wagner had two hits each in the nightcap.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Shenandoah on Wednesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
