Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel hit three home runs and got solid pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (13-13, 7-3 CC) took game one 4-1 before completing the sweep with a 9-3 game-two win.
Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) led McDaniel with four hits, including her first two collegiate home runs.
Marit Vike led the Garnet (13-7, 3-3 CC) with two hits and a run scored in the nightcap.
In game one, Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) ripped a double to center to lead off the second inning. After an Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) one-out walk, Persinger blasted an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence for her first collegiate roundtripper and a 3-0 lead.
Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) roped a one-out solo home run in the third inning to make it a 4-0 game.
Gabriella Natoli reached on a throwing error to lead off the sixth before a pair of fielder's choices put runners at the corners with one out. A passed ball allowed Natoli to score to set the final margin.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) went the distance in the opener, scattering four hits for her fourth win of the year.
In the nightcap, Vike led off the top of the first with an infield single before stealing second and taking third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a Kennedy Kings sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
McDaniel, however, sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame to turn the deficit into a 7-1 lead.
Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) drew a four-pitch walk to lead things off before an error on a sacrifice attempt put runners at first and second.
Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) dropped a single into right to tie the game.
A Wilkins single to left scored Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
A fielding error scored Hishon and kept two runners on with no outs.
After a fielder's choice and Wagner single loaded the bases with one out, Persinger turned around another 0-1 pitch for a grand slam and 7-1 lead.
A pair of errors in the third allowed the Garnet to close to within 7-2 on a Kings RBI groundout.
Singles from Haley Michael (Oldsmar, Fla./East Lake), Scardina, Lewis and Wilkins stretched the lead to 9-2 in the home half of the inning.
Swarthmore used another two errors in the fifth to set the final score.
Persinger and Wagner had three hits each in game two while Hishon and Wilkins added two apiece.
Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) went the distance, allowing just four hits and striking out six for her sixth win of the year.
The Green Terror returns to action at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
