Box Score 2 COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – McDaniel plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to salvage a split at Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (9-11, 3-1 CC) captured game two 4-3 after the Bears (10-6, 2-2 CC) took the opener, 5-0.
Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) pitched 7 2/3 innings in game two with three strikeouts and rapped her first collegiate hit to spark the eighth-inning rally.
Kaitlyn Willis struck out 14 batters in 14 innings of work to lead Ursinus in the circle.
McDaniel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap. Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) led off with a single and took second on an error before Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) bunted her to third.
A Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) two-out infield hit plated Scadina for a 1-0 lead.
The two pitchers settled in, allowing just seven more combined baserunners until the bottom of the seventh.
Faith Carson led off with a single before moving to second on a groundout and third on a Callie Crouse single.
With two outs, Rachel Hyman poked a single through the left side to tie the game.
Rickrode then helped her own cause, leading off the top of the eighth with a double to right. Scardina followd with her third hit of the game – an RBI knock down the right-field line.
A Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) one-out double to the gap scored Scardina for a 3-1 lead.
Wilkins followed with an RBI knock of her own for a three-run advantage.
Three straight two-out singles loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning before Crouse poked a ball through the right side to close the deficit to one.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) came on in relief and got a strikeout for the save.
In game one, Morgan Comfort led off the home first with a single and scored on a Kayla Quinn triple. A Carson RBI groundout staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead.
Ursinus tacked on a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a Comfort home run.
Willis limited McDaniel to three hits and struck out nine in the complete-game shutout.
Scardina finished the day with four hits while Wilkins had three.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
