Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – McDaniel split its final two games at the Sunkissed Classic in non-conference softball action on Friday.
The Green Terror (6-10) topped Utica 9-1 in five innings before Cortland rallied for a 9-8 win over McDaniel in eight innings.
Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) led the Green Terror with five hits, including two doubles and a home run.
After the Pioneers (3-5) stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first, Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) legged out a double to lead off the home first.
Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) followed with an RBI single to center before a Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) added a single up the middle to put runners at first and second.
A Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) single loaded the bases before Persinger was able to score on a double play.
After Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) drew a walk, Wagner doubled to the gap to score both runners for a 4-0 lead.
Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) led off the fourth with a double before a Persinger single put runners at the corners with one out.
A Hishon single stretched the lead to 5-0 before Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) roped a single to left to score Persinger. Hishon was also awarded home on an obstruction call to make it 7-0.
Lewis added an RBI single up the middle for a 8-0 lead.
A pair of one-out singles in the top of the fifth and a two-out walk loaded the bases. A Madison Judge popup on the infield that landed just out of reach scored Jacqueline Aronin to break up the shutout.
Scardina drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning and stole second. After she moved to third on a groundout, Wilkins dropped a single into shallow right field for the game-ending hit.
Wagner went 3-for-3 in the game while Scardina, Persinger, Hishon, Wilkins and Deichman all had two knocks. Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) went the distance in the circle with two strikeouts.
Tied at 7-all with the Red Dragons (5-5), Scardina was placed on second to start the eighth before moving to third on a Persinger sacrifice.
A Hishon RBI groundout gave McDaniel an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, it was Averee May starting at second. With two strikes, Andrea Schoonmaker poked a single into left field to put runners at the corners.
After she stole second, Ericka Sadowski walked to load the bases and Kelly O'Gorman doubled to the gap for the game-winning runs.
A Schoonmaker single, bunt hit and two-out error staked Cortland to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
With two outs in the third, Scardina dropped a ball into left field and Persinger drew a walk to put runners at first and second.
Hishon, Coyle and Lewis all followed with RBI singles for a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth, Deichman led off with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice.
A fielding error stretched the lead to 4-1.
After Lewis was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth, Wagner cranked the first pitch she saw over the right-field fence for her third home run of the season and a 6-1 lead.
Doubles from O'Gorman and Taylor Felicello keyed a stretch of six straight Red Dragons to reach, closing the deficit to 6-5.
With two outs, Schoonmaker doubled to the gap for a 7-6 lead.
With one out in the sixth, Persinger was hit by a pitch and Hishon walked. With the bases loaded, Wagner delivered a single through the left side to tie the game at 7-all.
Lewis was 3-for-3 in game two while Scardina, Coyle and Wagner all had three hits.
The Green Terror returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Mar. 24. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
