Coyle goes 2-for-3 in game-two win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – McDaniel split a pair of games to open the season at the Triangle Classic in non-conference softball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (1-1) dropped a 6-2 decision to Pfeiffer to open the season before notching a 4-3 win over Eastern Mennonite in the second game.

Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) led McDaniel in its win, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Kiana Millsaps led the Falcons (4-0) in the circle in game one, striking out four in four innings for the win.

Kelsi Martin led the Royals (0-1) with six strikeouts in five innings.

Tied at 3-all, Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) roped a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh before stealing second. After a Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) walk put runners at the corners, Tori Wilkins (Lutz, Fla./Land O'Lakes) drove in Lewis with the game-winning run.

Scoreless through three innings, Danielle Brenneman led off the top of the fourth with a home run for Eastern Mennonite.

In the bottom of the frame, Wilkins poked a one-out single before stealing second and scoring on a Coyle two-out double to tie the game.

Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) led off the fifth with a home run for a 2-1 lead.

A Brenneman double and Makayla Morris two-out single knotted the game in the top of the sixth before a Coyle leadoff home run in the home sixth once again put McDaniel on top by one.

Alia Miller led off the seventh with a double before scoring on an overthrow when she stole third to tie the game.

Wilkins had two hits in game two. Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) struck out three in four innings before Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) pitched the final three innings with one strikeout for the win.

In the opener, Vada Blue Sherrill was hit by a pitch to lead off the game before stealing second. Back-to-back singles from Stephanie Fortner and Makenzie Pennell staked Pfeiffer to a 1-0 lead.

Sara Brown singled to lead off the second before later scoring on a Sherrill single to double the advantage.

Back-to-back doubles to start the third by Millsaps and Lindsay Powell made it 3-0.

The Falcons tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth for a 5-0 lead before Michaela Persinger (Emmittsburg, Md./Catoctin) rapped a two-out single for her first collegiate hit in the bottom of the frame. An obstruction call at the plate two batters later put McDaniel on the board.

Rickrode sat down Pfeiffer in order in the fifth and sixth, recording two of her four strikeouts, before a pair of singles and two-out error made it a 6-2 game in the top of the seventh.

After Wagner drew a walk to lead off the seventh and gave way to pinch-runner Madisyn Johnson (Glen Rock, Pa./Dallastown Area), Wilkins had a pinch-hit single and Lewis walked to load the bases.

Johnson was able to score on a wild pitch to set the final score.

The Green Terror to action at Meredith on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
