Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel needed extra innings but defeated Gettysburg 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Wednesday.
Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) had two hits in the first of two scheduled games for the Green Terror (11-8-1, 5-0-1 CC), who took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule in the 10th inning.
Kipe then left questions in the nightcap. With the team trailing 2-0 heading to the top of the seventh, Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) laced the first pitch she saw for a double to the gap. Kipe then sent an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence to tie the game.
The Bullets (13-8-1, 2-3-1 CC) sat down the next three and then, with darkness quickly descending, Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to ensure the inning would count. However, the umpires and coaches elected not to attempt to start the eighth inning and suspended the game. After consultation with the conference office, the final result stands as a tie with all statistics counting unless an outcome is required to determine either the No. 1 seed or a playoff team, at which time the teams will be required to replay the game in its entirety.
Gettysburg plated a single run in the third on an infield single and Wendy Folfus two-out double before adding the second run on a Stephanie Leonardo two-out double and Mattea Ghaffary single.
In the opening contest, Taylor Doi led off with a triple to right before scoring on a Sarahrose Jonik two-out double to the gap for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
McDaniel tied the game with two outs in the top of the seventh. Kipe singled up the middle before an Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) single put runners at first and second.
Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) followed with a single to center field to plate Kipe but the pinch-runner was thrown out at the plate, attempting to score the go-ahead run.
McDaniel responded in the bottom of the inning, throwing out the potential winning run at the plate to send the game to extra innings.
Both teams had opportunities in the eighth and ninth before Maddy Johnson (Glen Rock, Pa./Dallastown Area) was placed at second base to start the 10th.
After a sacrifice moved her to third, a two-out error allowed Johnson to score the go-ahead run.
Gettysburg also successfully executed the bunt to start the bottom of the inning but a Johnson strikeout and a groundout gave the sophomore her first save and Valerie Lamb (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar) her second win in as many starts.
Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) added two hits for the Green Terror.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
