Johnson fans four in opener to key sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – McDaniel got solid pitching in both games, keying a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader sweep at Swarthmore in softball action on Thursday.

The Green Terror (19-12-1, 10-1-1 CC) took the opener 3-1 before completing the sweep 11-2 in five innings to secure its sixth straight CC tournament berth.

Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) led McDaniel in the opener, scattering seven hits and striking out four for the complete-game win. Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) backed her up with another solid outing in game two, allowing just four hits in the five-inning victory.

Kalli Segal led the Garnet (11-21, 2-12 CC) with four hits in the twinbill.

Tied at 1-all in game one, Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) doubled off the fence to lead off the sixth before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on a sacrifice fly in foul territory for a 2-1 lead.

With one out in the seventh, Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) singled through the left side before scoring on Alicia Wagner's (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) first career triple to set the final margin.

A Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) double and Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) single staked the Green Terror to a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

Segal led off the home fifth with a double before taking third on a sacrifice and scoring on a Marit Vike safety squeeze that went for a hit, tying the game at 1-all.

Tied at 1-all in game two, Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) drew a walk to lead off the seventh before stealing second and taking third on a groundout. She then scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.

Miller later singled in the inning and stole second before scoring on a Lewis single for a 3-1 lead.

McDaniel then sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, plating six runs to break the game open. Kaitlin Yealy (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) led off the frame with a single before later adding a two-run base knock up the middle.

An Emilie Morse double, passed ball and Segel single up the middle made it a 9-2 game in the bottom of the fourth.

Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) rapped a one-out double down the line before taking third on a fly out and scoring on a passed ball to reestablish the eight-run lead.

Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) tripled with two outs before scoring on an error for the final margin.

Weisser worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame to end the game early.

Lewis and Hishon each had three hits in game two while Miller and Yealy had two apiece.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Dickinson on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
