Wagner records six hits in season-opening sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – McDaniel survived a pair of late rallies by Methodist to earn a sweep in non-conference softball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (2-0) took the season opener by a 5-3 margin before exploding for a 10-8 win in the nightcap.

Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) recorded six hits and five RBIs on the day to lead the way.

Samantha Jacobs went 5-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Monarchs (2-10) in the nightcap.

In the opener, Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) led off the top of the third with a single to center before stealing second and scoring on a Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) double for a 1-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, Wagner singled and took second on an error before scoring on a two-out Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) single for a 2-0 advantage.

Lewis reached on an error to start the fifth before scoring on an Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) single. Kipe took second on the throw and then stole third and was able to score on a Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

A Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) single and Tayler Hishon (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) double stretched the lead to five.

A one-out error in the bottom of the seventh opened the door for Methodist. A walk and fielder's choice that did not result in an out loaded the bases.

Autumn Eider singled home Jordan Pietrolaj and an error also allowed Savannah Dunn and Jacobs to score and cut the deficit to 5-3.

Weisser, however, got a pair of fly balls to get out of the inning and complete her first win of the season. The senior went the distance in the circle with a strikeout, allowing just five hits.

In the nightcap, Miller led off the game with a single and stole second before taking third on a groundout and scoring on a Wagner single for a 1-0 lead.

Lewis singled to lead off the third before scoring on another Wagner single.

The Monarchs drew even in the bottom of the frame. Jacobs led off with a triple before singles from Morgan Faircloth and Lindsey Champion coupled with an Aly Thomas sacrifice fly tied the game.

Maring reached on an error to lead off the fourth before stealing second. Miller followed with an RBI single and swiped second.

A Kipe double plated Miller for a 4-2 lead before Wagner drove in Kipe and gave way to Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) as a pinch runner. Hishon singled home Scardina for a 6-2 advantage.

An error, walk and Jacbos RBI single cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the frame.

Miller roped a two-out double in the fifth before Lewis drew a walk.

Kipe and Wanger each followed with run-producing knocks to make it a 9-3 game.

Leading 10-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Emily Hester and Allyson Aycock drew one-out walks and Katelyn Howell singled to load the bases.

After a fielder's choice got the second out at the plate, Jacobs roped a two-run single and Faircloth followed with a double to bring the winning run to the plate.

Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), however, induced a groundball right back to her to record her first collegiate win in the circle.

The Green Terror returns to action at Meredith on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
