Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Moravian racked up 673 yards of total offense en route to a 55-27 win over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference football opener for both teams on Saturday.
Isaac Murray (Columbia, Md./Atholton) led the Green Terror (0-2, 0-1 CC) with 126 all-purpose yards, scoring a touchdown on both offense and special teams.
Chris Negron led the Greyhounds (2-0, 1-0 CC) with 167 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Mike Hayes went 20-for-22 through the air, throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns.
Hayes engineered a quick four-play drive on Moravian's opening possession, hitting three quick passes and then keeping it for the final two yards and a 7-0 lead just 1:15 into the game.
Murray needed just 14 seconds to return the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for McDaniel's first kickoff return for a touchdown in five years and a tie game.
The Greyhounds needed seven more plays to take the lead back when Negron bounced off the right side on a third-and-1 and hit the pylon from from 11 yards out for a 14-7 lead with 11:14 to play in the opening quarter.
On the next Moravian possession, the Greyhounds marched 80 yards on 11 plays buoyed by a fourth-down conversion from the McDaniel 9. Hayes converted a third-and-goal from the 13, hitting Liam Nolan for a touchdown. The extra point made it a 21-7 game with 4:03 to play.
After moving to the Moravian 10 before the first quarter ended, Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) hit Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest) in the front corner of the end zone on the first play of the second quarter to close the deficit to 21-14 just six seconds into the period.
Jalen Snyer-Scipio capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with back-to-back receptions, including a 33-yard reception for a touchdown to push the lead back to 14 with 11:52 to play in the second quarter.
Negron tacked on a five-yard touchdown run with 7:14 to play to establish a new Moravian record for rushing touchdowns in his career.
The Greyhounds extended the lead to 49-14 before Koester hit Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) out of the backfield for a 19-yard completion and touchdown to make it a 49-21 game with 19 seconds to play in the third quarter.
Murray added his second touchdown of the day, scoring from one yard out to cap a 10-play, 53-yard drive to make it a 55-27 game with 6:49 to play in the final quarter.
Ben Kahn (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) led the defense with nine tackles.
The Green Terror returns to action in the home opener against Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
