Box Score 2 CHESTERTOWN, Md. – McDaniel jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one en route to a doubleheader split at Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (24-16, 10-6 CC) took the opener 7-4 to officially secure its fifth straight conference tournament bid before the Shorewomen (20-18, 11-5 CC) escaped game two with a 2-1 win and lock up the top seed in next weekend's conference tournament.
After Gettysburg swept Haverford, McDaniel secured the No. 3 seed and will play the Bullets in Friday's first game of the double-elimination tournament. Host Washington will take on the Fords in the day's second game. Action will continue on Saturday and Sunday in Chestertown. Game times will be finalized on Monday.
Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central) led the Green Terror with four hits on the afternoon.
Paige Briganti led the Shorewomen with three hits, including a two-run double in game two for the hosts' lone runs.
Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) led off game one with a single before stealing second.
A one-out Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) single through the left side put runners at the corners.
After a dropped foul popup extended her at bat, Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) roped a double down the left-field line to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) beat out a two-out infield single to score Weisser from third for a 3-0 advantage.
Miller homered to center with two outs in the second for a 4-0 advantage.
With one out in the third, Weisser, Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) and Hishon strung together singles to load the bases before Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) drew a walk to forece in Weisser for a 5-0 lead.
A Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) one-out double and singles by Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and Weisser stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
After the Shorwomen had loaded the bases in each of the first three innings but could not score, Clare Hofstedt drew a one-out walk in the fifth.
An Allyson Meil infield single and double steal before a Maddie Bennett two-out double cut the deficit to 6-2.
Hishon walked to lead off the seventh before stealing second and scoring on a Galati two-out single for a 7-2 advantage.
A Bennett single and three walks cut the deficit to 7-3 in the bottom of the frame before Hofstedt single with two outs made it a three-run game with the bases still loaded. Valerie Lamb (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar), however, worked out of the jam for the final time with a soft liner to Kipe to preserve the win.
Weisser finished game one with three hits while Miller, Kipe, Hishon and Galati all had two hits.
Three straight hits that did not leave the infield and a two-out walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning in game two before Briganti drove a double to the gap for a 2-0 lead.
Hishon drew a one-out walk in the second before stealing second.
Caitlin Justice (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) roped a double to cut the deficit in half.
Galati followed with a single through the right side but Hofstedt was able to gun Justice at the plate to keep it a one-run lead for the hosts.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) limited the Shorewomen to just three baserunners the rest of the way but the Green Terror, who twice had a runner at third base, could not plated the tying run.
Lewis and Kipe drew two-out walks in the top of the seventh but Bennett got a flyball for the final out.
Galati had two of McDaniel's five hits in the nightcap.
