Miller records four hits in split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel split a pair of one-run games with Haverford in the Centennial Conference (CC) softball opener for both teams on Saturday.

The Green Terror (9-9, 1-1 CC) took the opener 11-10 on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh before the Fords (8-8, 1-1 CC) captured the nightcap 3-2 in nine innings.

Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) led McDaniel with four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. She had two home runs in the opener, including a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the first.

Julia Blake led Haverford with four hits of her own, including three of the Fords' six game-two hits.

After Haverford scored a pair of runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh of game one, Roxana Aviles (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) led off the bottom of the frame with a first-pitch double off the wall in left field.

Miller drew a walk before Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) laid down a bunt that spun to a stop right in front of home plate. The Fords attempted to get the lead runner but Aviles slid into third, beating the throw.

Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) worked an eight-pitch at bat, eventually drawing the bases-loaded walk to force in Aviles with the game-winning run.

After Miller's leadoff home run, a Miwa Wetzel single, error, walk and wild pitch evened the game in the top of the second.

A dropped fly ball with one out in the bottom of the inning opened the gate for McDaniel. Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) singled up the middle and Miller went deep to straightaway center field for a three-run shot and 4-1 lead.

Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) drew a one-out walk before starting pitcher Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) ran for her and took second on a wild pitch. A Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) triple into the right-field corner scored Johnson for a 5-1 lead. She scored on a sacrifice fly one batter later to make it a five-run lead.

Kristin Tatum led off the fourth with a home run before singles from Miller and Lewis and a Kipe double made it a 8-2 game in the fourth.

Three straight singles to lead off the fifth coupled with an infield single and error closed the deficit to 8-5.

A Deichman triple and Aviles single pushed the lead back to 9-5 in the home half of the inning before a Jessica Koshinski three-run home run made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth.

Singles by Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) pushed the lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the inning.

A fielding error and singles by Alex Craig and Blake keyed the two-run top of the seventh.

Johnson went the distance with six strikeouts to pick up the win in the circle.

Miller and Kipe each had three hits while Deichman and Aviles had two hits each.

In game two, Kendall Chambers led off the third inning with an infield single before a Craig one-out single put two runners on base.

Rachel Wolfson followed with a double to score Chambers but Craig was tagged out when she came off third base for the second out.

Blake followed with a double to the gap, scoring Wolfson for a 2-0 lead.

Caitlin Justice (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) led off the bottom of the inning with a double before scoring on a Lewis single up the middle.

Wagner singled to right to lead off the fourth before giving way to pinch-runner Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough), who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Deichman two-out double to the gap.

Each team had just one baserunner after scoring their runs until a Blake leadoff double in the top of the ninth.

A sacrifice moved her to third before Tatum rolled a ball to short and Blake was able to beat the throw home for the deciding run.

McDaniel returns to action at Dickinson on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
