Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – McDaniel exploded for 23 hits and 15 runs in a sweep at The Spring Games in softball action on Thursday.
The Green Terror (6-8) defeated Ripon 6-0 in the first game of the day before topping Agnes Scott 9-1 in five innings.
Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) led McDaniel with four hits, recording a pair of base hits in each games. She had two doubles and a triple among her four hits and added a pair of RBIs.
Against the Red Hawks (0-7), the Green Terror got on the board early. With one out, Lewis drove a double to deep center field before scoring on an Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) double off the third-base bag.
An Alicia Wagner (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch) followed with a single to right field to put runners at the corners. A two-out Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) hard-hit ball up the middle scored Kipe for a 2-0 advantage.
A one-out Roxana Aviles (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) double to deep center, fielding error and Lewis RBI groundout stretched the lead to 3-0 an inning later.
Four straight two-out hits in the third accounted for three more runs. Deichman singled to right before scoring on a Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) double to left.
Caitlin Justice (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) followed with a single of her own to score Fletcher and an Aviles single plated Justice from second.
In addition to Lewis' two hits, Kipe and Aviles each had a pair of knocks while Deichman went 3-for-4.
Fiona Johnson (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded her second shutout in as many days, fanning four and scattering five hits.
The Scotties (3-12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a walk, fielder's choice and Kelsea Hunter two-out triple to center field.
The Green Terror countered in the bottom of the frame with a one-out Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) double, hit batter and groundout and Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) single up the middle.
Hishon drew a walk to lead off the fourth, she stole second and moved to third when the throw bounced off the bag and into center field.
Fletcher was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day, breaking the program record for a career, before giving way to pinch-runner Cricket Lowe (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder), who stole second.
Miller dropped down a suicide squeeze to plate Hishon with one out before a wild throw at third sailed and allowed Lowe to also score and make it a 3-1 game.
McDaniel batted around in the fifth to record its second run-rule victory of the year.
Kipe singled to lead off the frame before Wagner drove a ball to right field for a double.
Jaime Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) laced a ball to the right-center gap for her third triple of the year, stretching the lead to 5-1.
After she scored on a Deichman sacrifice fly, Hishon drew a walk and stole second.
A two-out Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) double plated Hishon before she was able to score from third on a Miller single to center.
Miller stole second and Lewis dropped a ball into left field to end the game.
Miller and Lewis each had two hits while Valerie Lamb (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar) went the distance in the circle for her win.
McDaniel concludes its 12-game Florida trip against Keene State and Elmhurst on Friday. The first game begins at 3 p.m. with the nightcap scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
