OPENING KICKOFF: Today's Centennial Conference (CC) game marks the 29th meeting between McDaniel (2-5, 2-4 CC) and Juniata (4-3, 3-3 CC) in a series that dates back to 1923. The Eagles have won the last four meetings, including by a 20-7 margin in Westminster last season to take a 15-12-1 lead in the all-time series. The Green Terror had won the previous three meetings, including 23-19 in Westminster in 2011.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Juniata scored three times from two yards or fewer to record a 20-7 victory over McDaniel last season. Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror with 59 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 12 yards. Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) had his second 200-yard passing game in three starts, throwing for 233 yards on 23-for-46 passing. Matt Lehr led the Eagles with 87 yards rushing, including the game-clinching touchdown with 2:47 to play.
LAST TIME OUT: McDaniel found the end zone midway through the fourth quarter to top Dickinson 14-7 in a defensive battle last Saturday. Breon Herbert (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) hauled in four passes for the Green Terror but none bigger than final one – a 58-yard touchdown grab that broke a 7-all tie. Claude Richardson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) led the defense with 10 tackles, including three for loss. Pat Irwin led the Red Devils with 16 tackles – one of four player to reach double-digit stops. Jimmy Turner added 14 while Ned Emala and Tyler Heisey had 12 and 10, respectively.
WITH HONORS: Breon Herbert and Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) were named to their respective CC Weekly Honor Rolls last week. Herbert earned a spot on the offensive ledger after recording a career-high 78 yards receiving, including a 58-yard touchdown. Quattrone was tabbed to the defensive list after leading the defense with six tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His forced fumble thwarted a late Red Devil drive for the game-tying score. His recovery in the first quarter set up McDaniel's first score.
LEADING THE WAY: Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest), Vince Gorgone (Clarksville, Md./Good Counsel) and Matt Quattrone will captain the squad in 2016. This is the second straight year Quattrone has served as a captain while DeMent and Gorgone are first-time captains.
BREON'S BIG DAY: Junior Breon Herbert became the spark McDaniel needed in the fourth quarter on Saturday. Tied at 7-all midway with fewer than seven minutes to play and facing a third-and-2 at its own 42, Will Koester dropped back to pass. He found Herbert to his left near midfield for his fourth catch and a first down. Herbert wasn't done, though, he made a would-be tackler miss and sprinted down the sideline. With the aid of a big block from Billy Adkins III (Delmar, Md./Delmar), Herbert found the end zone to put the hosts on top and record the Green Terror's longest play from scrimmage this season. Herbert finished the day with four grabs for a career-best 78 yards. It was his third touchdown of the season.
DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: Since halftime at Franklin & Marshall, the McDaniel defense has allowed just 14 points and 289 yards of total offense. The Green Terror has surrendered just one drive of more than 37 yards over the last six quarters and just three opponent drives have lasted longer than seven plays. Against Dickinson last week, the defense pitched a shutout for more than three quarters and held an opponent to its lowest point total since shutting out Susquehanna on Oct. 9, 2010. The Red Devils also mustered only 175 yards of total offense. It was the first time McDaniel held an opponent to fewer than 200 yards since that 2010 victory (198 yards). The 175 yards were the fewest conceded since allowing only 66 in a 38-7 win at St. Vincent on Sept. 6, 2008.
A PUNTING PARTY: On a windy day last Saturday, neither offense was able to really get moving. The day started with three straight three-and-outs before Perry Stefanelli returned a punt 25 yards to the Dickinson 35 in an attempt to spark the offense. John Chamberlin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) ran for 11 yards on the next play for the game's first first down. However, an exchange of turnovers resulted in a Green Terror touchdown with 4:14 to play in the first quarter and then the offenses turned the party over to their punters. With the exception of the Green Terror's choice to run out the clock on its final first-half possession, 14 straight drives ended with punts. The 14th in that sequence was blocked and Dickinson scored on the next play to tie the game. Stephen Walker punted 10 times for Dickinson, averaging 39.6 yards per kick with a 60-yarder to his credit. Doug MacArthur (Roebling, N.J./Florence Twp. Memorial), on the other end, punted seven times with an average of 37.3 yards per kick. He had a career-best 51-yarder and dropped two inside the Red Devil 20.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: For the first time in his collegiate career, senior Matt Quattrone got the better of his father. Joel Quattrone is the defensive coordinator for Dickinson and Dad was 3-0 against his son entering Saturday. On his final Homecoming, however, Son came out with the victory and his play had a big part of the defensive battle. After a miscue in the backfield, Matt recovered a fumble to set up McDaniel's first-quarter touchdown. After the offense had taken a 14-7 lead, the Red Devils had drove to the Green Terror 32 in search of the game-tying touchdown. Quattrone stripped the ball and Duane Lucas Jr. (Gwynn Oaks, Md./Western Tech) fell on it to thwart the march.
GROUND AND POUND: The McDaniel offense had one of its most balanced outings of the season, throwing for 168 yards and running for 164. John Chamberlin was a big part of that running attack. He churned out 22 of the Green Terror's 40 runs, powering for a season-best 92 yards. On the final drive after the defense forced a turnover, Chris Bassler went exclusively to his power back. With 2:31 on the clock, Chamberlin toted the rock seven straight carries for 33 yards. He netted positive yards on six of those runs, including five yards on a third-and-2 that allowed McDaniel to run out the clock.
TERROR TIDBITS: The offensive line did not allow a sack for the fourth time in seven games this season… McDaniel won on Homecoming for the first time since 2011 and a 23-19 win over Juniata on "Sno'coming"… The Green Terror won consecutive home games for the first time since 2009.
COACHES' CORNER: Mike Dailey is in his first season at the helm of the Green Terror after seven seasons as an assistant on the staff. He enters today's game with an overall record of 2-5. His first win came on Sept. 24 with a 30-27 victory over Ursinus. Dailey joined the Green Terror staff in 2009 with a pedigree of success at all levels of football that included compiling a record of 115-83 and two championships in 12 years as a head coach in the Arena Football League (AFL), leading the Albany Firebirds and Colorado Crush that included winning league titles in 1999 and 2005. For his first six seasons on the McDaniel sidelines, he served as defensive coordinator. His scheme put pressure on opposing quarterbacks game-in and game-out, recording 101 sacks and 55 interceptions. He helped produce 12 All-Centennial Conference selections, including four first-team nods. In 2015, Dailey shifted responsibilities to the offensive side of the ball – something he is renowned for from his days in the AFL. He spent last season coordinating the pass game and working specifically with the wide receivers… Tim Launtz is in his sixth season at the helm of the Eagles, entering today with a record of 23-35. He became Juniata's 22nd head coach after serving 15 years on the staff, going 1-9 in his first season as the head man. In his third year, he guided the squad to a 7-3 regular-season record and ECAC Bowl appearance. He most recently served seven seasons as the Eagles' quarterbacks coach. Prior to that, he mentored the receiving corps, defensive backs and served as special teams coordinator from 1997-99. The Huntingdon native graduated from Juniata in 1980.
THE WORD ON JUNIATA: The Eagles enter today's game off a 56-17 loss at Muhlenberg last Saturday. Juniata held a 10-0 lead in the game's first 7:48 before the Mules reeled off 56 straight points… Joel Reighard returned an interception 36 yards for the 10-0 lead… Hank Coyne completed 21 of 37 passes for 211 yards. His favorite receiver was Kirby Breault, who hauled in 10 passes for 115 yards and the team's only offensive touchdown… Juniata was limited to just 36 yards on the ground and 247 overall while Muhlenberg racked up 532 yards of total offense… The Eagles are fourth in the CC in scoring offense (29.7 ppg) but ranked ninth in scoring defense (37.4)… Coyne is averaging 250.1 yards per game through the air (fourth in the conference), completing 57.8 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns… Breault leads all conference receivers with 60 grabs for 999 yards. His 142.7 yard-per-game average is nearly 50 yards per game better than the next receiver. Breault has no fewer than 116 yards receiving in a game this season, including a 213-yard outburst against Ursinus two weeks ago. The senior enters this week's game with 2,620 career yards and 21 touchdowns.
