Maring has three hits in playoff-clinching sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – McDaniel needed 10 innings but plated a run in the top of the inning and held Gettysburg off the board in the bottom of the frame to complete a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader sweep in softball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (21-7, 11-1 CC) ran its winning streak to nine game, secured its fourth straight 20-win season and clinched a CC playoff berth with the 6-1 and 2-1 victories.

Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) led McDaniel with three hits in the twinbill and also had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning of game two.

Jamie Abell paced the Bullets (25-7, 10-4 CC) with four hits.

After Gettysburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an Abell two-out infield single and Steph Zengel double, the two pitchers worked through three scoreless innings before going to the international tiebreaker in the 10th.

Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) was placed on second base to start the top of the 10th. Roxana Aviles (Manasses, Va./Osbourne) successfully executed the ensuing sacrifice to move the go-ahead run to third.

Maring followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Scardina. The Green Terror added two more baserunners in the inning but Aileen Reilly worked out of trouble to keep it a one-run game.

Meghan Hisgen was placed on second in the bottom of the inning before a fielder's choice on the bunt attempt and a stolen base by pinch-runner Jessica Casale put the winning runs in scoring position.

Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) recorded strikeouts 11, 12 and 13 on the next three batters to finish her day with 21 Ks and move to within seven of the 1,300 mark for her career.

Tayler Hishon (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) led off the second inning with a double before moving to third on a groundout and scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) and Hishon joined Maring with two hits in the nightcap.

Despite nine baserunners through the first five innings for McDaniel, game one went to the sixth inning scoreless.

Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led off the frame with a walk before an error and wild pitch put runners at second and third.

Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) drew a walk to load the bases – one of 11 issued by Bullet pitching in the game – and Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) followed with a walk of her own to force in Weisser.

A wild pitch allowed Hishon to scored before a one-out single from Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central) scored Fletcher and Kipe for a 4-0 lead.

A Sam Misurell single, Abell double and throwing error cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Miller and Weisser drew walks to lead off the seventh before a Hishon double set the final margin.

Brehm had eight strikeouts in the opener.

McDaniel returns to action at Haverford on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
