Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel posted a pair of shutouts in a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader sweep of Franklin & Marshall in softball action on Sunday.
The Green Terror (17-7, 9-1 CC) recorded matching 3-0 victories to move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) led the offense with two hits in each game. She also drove in all three runs in the nightcap.
Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) did the work in the circle, striking out 25 batters in 14 innings of work to improve to 13-5 on the year. The 25 strikeouts now gives her 1,258 for her career to move into third place in NCAA Division III history.
Patricia Crigler led the Diplomats (16-6, 6-4 CC) with both of her team's hits in game one.
In the opener, Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) poked a single through the left side with two outs in the third inning before Miller followed with a single up the middle.
A fielding error loaded the bases for Tayler Hishon (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), who skied a ball that fell in for a two-run single, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) singled with one out in the sixth inning before giving way to pinch-runner Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central), who stole second and score on a ball that went under the glove of an infielder for a 3-0 lead.
Brehm struck out the side in the top of the seventh to give her a season-high 13 for the game and notch her fifth shutout of the year.
Hishon joined Miller with two hits in the opener.
In game two, Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) doubled to lead off the home half of the first inning before drawing the shortstop into holding the ball on a ground ball by Lewis, putting runners at first and second with no outs.
Miller roped a ball down the first-base line to plate Maring before stealing second.
Isabel Shaefer, who struck out eight McDaniel hitters in game one, struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam with just one run across.
Caitlin Justice (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) singled to the gap to lead off the fifth inning.
Galati followed with a bunt that landed right in front of the plate and beat the throw to first to put runners at first and second.
A Maring sacrifice moved the runners up a base before a fielder's choice cut down the run at the plate for the second out.
Miller blasted a ball off the top of the fence in left-center for a double that scored both runners for a 3-0 lead.
Brehm struck out 12 against no walks in game two while Miller and Galati had two hits each.
McDaniel returns to action at Brdigewater on Wednesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
