Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning in both games to notch a pair of 9-1 wins over Urisnus in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
In both games, the Green Terror (15-7, 7-1 CC) held a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth before Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) capped a five-run inning with game-ending RBI singles.
Jamie Weisser (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led McDaniel with four hits on the twinbill, including a three-run home run in game one and two doubles in a three-hit nightcap.
Arastina Barry notched two of the hits for the Bears (8-13, 0-8 CC) in game two.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, Maring drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the frame. After moving to second on a groundout, she scored the game's first run on a two-out Tayler Hishon (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) single up the middle.
Delia Mercurio led off the top of the second with a line-drive over the fence in left-center to tie the game.
She was the first and last Ursinus batter to reach base. From there, Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) retired the next 12 batters, including the final six of her eight strikeouts to give her 1,233 for her career and move into fourth place in NCAA Division III history.
Taylor Fletcher (Linden, Va./Fauquier) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Olivia Kipe (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) followed with a bloop single into right field.
After Fletcher gave way to pinch-runner Megan Moore (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional) at second base, Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom) roped a double to the gap in right-center to score both runners at break the 1-all deadlock.
Deichman took third on a throwing error before scoring on a Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) single to right for a 4-1 lead.
After Brehm struck out the side in the top of the fifth to break the tie for fourth place all-time, her battery mate Payton Lewis (Valrico, Fla./Durant) singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Lindsey Miller (Gettysburg, Pa./New Oxford) drew a walk before Weisser went deep over the center field wall to push the lead to 7-1.
Fletcher singled with one out before a Kipe double to the gap put runners at second and third.
Deichman drew a walk to load the bases for Scardina, who singled to left to score Fletcher, before Maring laced a 2-1 pitch off the wall in the left field for the game-ending single.
In game two, Barry led off with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice and scoring on a Zoe Heinke single to right field for a 1-0 Bear lead.
A Weisser two-out double and Fletcher single to right field knotted the game in the bottom of the frame.
Kipe poked a ball up the middle to lead off the second before moving to second on a wild pitch and taking third on a flyout.
Roxana Aviles (Manassas, Va./Osbourne) walked with one out before Kipe scored on a Maring RBI groundout for a 2-1 lead.
Miller followed with a two-run homer to make it a 4-1 game that held until the fifth inning.
Weisser led off the fifth with a double to the gap before Fletcher traded places with her.
After Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central) came in to pinch run, Hishon walked to put two runners on.
Deichman followed with a single to right field, scoring Galati.
Moore, in as a pinch-runner for Deichman, stole second before a Kipe sacrifice fly scored Hishon from third.
Caitlin Justice (Stuart, Fla./Jensen Beach) drew a walk and stole second before Maring singled to right field with two outs to score both runners and once again end the game.
In addition to Weisser's three hits, Fletcher and Deichman had two each.
Valerie Lamb (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar) went the distance in the circle in game two, striking out three with no walks to earn her second win of the year.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
