Seniors hit bombs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Two McDaniel seniors contributed three game-one home runs to propel their team into the playoffs and a doubleheader sweep of Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.

Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) recorded two home runs among her three hits to lead the Green Terror (21-15, 10-6 CC), who also got a long ball from Jackie Liebowitz (Bellerose, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cordozo) – her first career home run. McDaniel took the opener 7-2 before holding on a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) struck out 19 batters on the day, including three in the final inning, to give her 300 on the season and McDaniel the No. 2 seed in next weekend's conference tournament at Muhlenberg. The Green Terror will play Haverford in the first game of the tournament while the Mules host Washington in the other first-round game of the double-elimination tournament.

Lauren Dockrill led the Shorewomen (23-16, 9-7 CC) with four hits on the day.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Davis went deep over the left-field fence for her first long ball since Mar. 4 and a 1-0 lead.

The lead held until Liebowitz lofted a ball over the right-field fence with one out in the fourth to start a six-run frame.

Amy Baumgardner (Hanover, Pa./South Western) followed with a double into left before Emily Sneeringer (Hanover, Pa./South Western) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.

A wild pitch moved both runners up a base.

After being hit by two pitches in the same at bat but not being granted first base, Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) singled into right field and then moved to third on a misplay by the right fielder, scoring both runners in the process for a 5-0 lead.

A Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) single through the left side plated Blohm.

Davis made it a two-home run day with a shot to left field for a 7-0 lead.

A Kylie Nottingham walk and Jaclyn Jayo home run with one out in the top of the sixth set the final margin before Brehm retired the final five batters she faced.

Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central) reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the first in game two before being erased on a Davis fielder's choice.

Stacey Armacost (Glenville, Pa./South Western) followed with a single up the middle before Stephanie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) doubled to the gap in right center for a 2-0 lead.

Sneeringer and Lindsey Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) walked and were hit by a pitch, respectively to lead off the second.

Sidney followed with a single up the middle to load the bases before a misplayed comebacker allowed Sneeringer to score for a 3-0 advantage.

After a forceout at the plate for the first out, Armacost added with a bloop hit into left to score Sidney but Galati was cut down at the plate on a perfect throw to keep it a 4-0 game.

Dockrill led off the fourth with a diving single into left before Suzanne Patinella drilled a ball over the center-field fence to cut the deficit to 4-2.

A walk to Christine Anderson, who was then lifted for a pinch runner, sacrifice and Paige Briganti single cut the deficit to one.

A hit batter and walk loaded the bases but Brehm got out of the jam with a strikeout and then retired nine of the last 11 batters she faced to complete the sweep.

The Green Terror concludes the regular season at home against York (Pa.) on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
