Stitely has two hits

YORK, Pa. – McDaniel scored twice in the eighth inning of game one to earn a doubleheader split with York (Pa.) in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.

In a final tune-up before hosting the Centennial Conference tournament this weekend, the Green Terror (24-12) took the opener 4-2 before the Spartans (14-24) captured game two, 5-2.

Sam Stitely (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) had two hits in the opener, including the game-winning RBI in extra innings.

Hannah Hugel led York with five total hits, including three in the nightcap.

Trailing 1-0, Stephanie Maring (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) reached on a one-out infield single in the top of the seventh before giving way to pinch-runner Amy Baumgardner (Hanover, Pa./South Western), who scored on a Laura Mertz (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills) double one batter later.

A groundout and two-out error Mertz to score with the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the frame, pinch-hitter Katie Wicket was hit by a pitch before a fielding error and bunt single loaded the bases.

Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) hit the first batter she faced to force in the tying run before recording a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to send the game to extra innings.

With Stacey Armacost (Glenville, Pa./South Western) placed at second base, Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) poked a ball up the middle to put runners at the corners.

After a popup and stolen base, Stitley singled down the right-field line to score Armacost for a 3-2 lead. A wild pitch allowed Sidney to score an insurance run.

In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans popped up the sacrifice bunt attempt and then flew out twice off Brehm to end the game.

A Brittany Schlorff one-out triple and Erin O'Leary single staked York to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

A leadoff walk to Ashley Chenoweth in the second inning of game two followed by a sacrifice and two-out bunt single and throwing error gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Hugel followed with a single to double the advantage.

A Baumgardner single, sacrifice bunt and Jackie Liebowitz (Bellerose, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cordozo) single cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth.

Singles from Vanessa Mendez, Cara Rubinaccio and Hugel in the bottom of the frame pushed the lead to 4-1.

Lindsey Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) pushed a one-out single through the left side before scoring on a Sarah Meszler (Herkimer, N.Y./Herkimer) two-out double to the gap in the fifth.

Brittany Threes led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a Sara Thacker RBI groundout for a 5-1 lead in the home fifth.

Sidney had two hits in game one while Meszler had a pair of knocks in game two.

The Green Terror opens the conference tournament against Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
