COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A pair of late rallies translated into a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader softball split between McDaniel and Ursinus on Saturday.

The Green Terror (18-8, 10-2 CC) took the opener 2-1 before the Bears (13-12, 3-5 CC) countered with a win in game two by an identical score.

Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) went the distance in both games, recording 23 strikeouts including 14 in the game-one win.

Kelly Schymanski struck out five for the win in the nightcap, adding two hits the offense.

Trailing 1-0 entering the seventh inning of game one, Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) led off the inning with a single to left before giving way to pinch-runner Laura Mertz (Gillette, N.J./Watchung Hills).

After a sacrifice moved Mertz to third, pinch-hitter Amy Baumgardner (Hanover, Pa./South Western) roped a ball to left field that rolled past a diving attempt for a triple.

Lindsey Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) followed with a bunt and Baumgardner beat the throw to the plate for a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth innings, Caitlin Higgins reached on a one-out bunt single.

After a two-out single to Rachel Vietheer and Allison Pfrommer walk to load the bases, Schymanski was hit by the first pitch she saw for a 1-0 lead.

Game two started much the same way as the opener with no score entering the bottom of the sixth, when Schymanski led off with a single to left field.

After a Kate Kehoe single moved her to second, Brehm notched her eighth strikeout of the second game to get the second out.

Schymanski took third on a passed ball before Cassie Brown drew a walk and Kelsey Coyne roped a triple to right field – the hardest hit ball all day by the Bears – for a 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the seventh, Sam Stitely (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) launched her first collegiate home run to left field for the final margin.

Schymanski limited McDaniel to just three hits in the nightcap.

The Green Terror, who hold a one-game advantage for the top spot in the CC standings with four games to play, returns to action at home against Gettysburg on Saturday. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
