Box Score 2 McDaniel splits doubleheader with Dickinson
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) rapped out three hits with an RBI to lead McDaniel to a doubleheader split with Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (7-11, 2-2 CC) notched a 4-2 victory in the opener before the Red Devils (8-10, 3-1 CC) bounced back for a 2-0 win in game two.
Chelsea Homa tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap, striking out five batters for Dickinson.
Sara Erlichman (Bedford, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) went the distance in game one, fanning three to pick up the fourth win of her rookie campaign.
Trailing 2-1, McDaniel took advantage of three Red Devil error to plate three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Davis reached second safely on a throwing error that put runners at first and second with one out.
Davis gave way to pinch-runner Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) before Erlichman singled into right field, plating Blohm from second.
A misplay allowed Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) to cross with the go-ahead run and put Erlichman at second.
With two outs, Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) singled up the middle to score Erlichman with an insurance run.
A Fusco single and Sidney RBI double in the bottom of the third staked the Green Terror to a 1-0 lead before Dickinson countered with four straight singles in the top of the fourth.
Madison Garish poked a one-out single through the left side before Melissa Osborn and Ari Coulter followed with hits of their own to load the bases for Denise Haines, who dropped a singled into right field, knotting the game at 1-all.
An Emma Murtaugh one-out solo home run gave the visitors a 2-1 edge in the top of the fifth.
In the nightcap, a pair of runs in the fourth inning was all Homa needed to get Dickinson the split.
Carly Jordan led off with a single before Murtaugh followed with a double the wall in left-center to put runners at second and third.
An RBI groundout from Alesha Sisco and a throwing error allowed Murtaugh to tack on a second run.
Homa and McDaniel's Ashley Meister (Vienna, Va./James Madison) matched zeros the rest of the way with only the Green Terror's Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) reaching third base in the bottom of the second in any of the other 13 half-innings.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
