Box Score Red Devils run for 210 yards in 41-16 victory
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ricky Martz completed 23 of 29 passes
for 262 yards and two touchdowns in Dickinson's 41-16 Centennial
Conference (CC) football victory over McDaniel on Saturday.
The Red Devils (1-2, 1-1 CC) gashed the nation's fifth-ranked
run defense for a season-high 210 yards, including 52 from their
quarterback and a team-high 95 yards from Tim Smith.
Smith added nine catches for 61 yards while Craig Helfer caught
eight passes for 155 yards, including two scores.
Tom
Massucci (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) completed 18 of 35 passes
and a touchdown for the Green Terror (3-1, 2-1 CC). He threw for
218 yards – his second consecutive 200-yard passing game and
seventh career 200-yard outing.
After Dickinson put together a 12-play drive deep into McDaniel
territory on the game's opening possession, Chris Kolb (Keymar,
Md./Francis Scott Key) picked off his fifth pass of the season to
thwart the march.
Massucci engineered a 10-play drive that was keyed by a 41-yard
completion to Matt Cahill
(Broomall, Pa./Haverford Twp.), setting up first-and-10 at the Red
Devil 12.
A rush for no gain and two straight incompletions, forced a
29-yard Jake
Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) field goal for a
3-0 lead with 6:42 on the first-quarter clock.
After Nichols second straight touchback, Smith ripped off a
60-yard run to move Dickinson to the McDaniel 20.
Three plays later, Martz ran around the left side from two yards
out for a touchdown and 7-3 advantage just 1:35 later to become the
first team this season to hold a lead on the Green Terror.
A 31-yard Martz-to-Helfer touchdown pass capped an 11-play,
71-yard drive to stretch the lead to 14-3 with just 1:12 elapsed in
the second quarter.
A 28-yard pass to Tom Orrok (Point
Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) and 18-yard touchdown catch by Ryan
Procaccini (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends School) pulled
the hosts within 14-9 after a missed PAT with 6:06 to play until
intermission.
A Gordon Craig 37-yard field goal as the first-half clock
expired stretched the lead to 17-9 at the break.
Three Dickinson touchdowns in the third quarter, including a
22-yard Julian Rosen fumble recovery for score, stretched the lead
to 34-9 with 16:07 to play.
The Green Terror took over at its own 34 and Massucci
immediately found Nick Bender
(Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Twp.) for a 26-yard gain.
Eight plays later, Ray O'Hara (Yardley,
Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) bounced outside to score from three
yards out and make it a 34-16 game with 13:48 to play.
A 27-yard catch by Helfer with 2:37 capped a 14-play, 85-yard
drive that consumed 7:53 and set the final margin.
Cahill made four catches for 76 yards to lead the Green Terror
receiving corps, which received catches from 13 different
players.
Zach
Martin (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) made a career-high 19
tackles – the most by a McDaniel defender since Drew
Abbamonte made 19 tackles against Gettysburg on Oct. 7, 2006.
Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]) and
Aaron
Slaughter (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) also reached double figures
in tackles with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Green Terror has next week off before returning to action at
home against Susquehanna on Oct. 9. Game time is 1 p.m.
