McDaniel splits with Hood in finale

Green Terror takes opener 9-8 in late rally

FREDERICK, Md. – Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) rapped out four hits for McDaniel in a doubleheader split with Hood in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.

The Green Terror (16-24) took the opener 9-8 with a pair of seventh-inning runs before the Blazers (17-23) forged the split with an 8-5 victory in game two.

Brittni Jones went 3-for-5 to lead Hood in the nightcap win.

Trailing 8-7 after an Erin McNally RBI double and Jordan Wolford two-run home run keyed a three-run sixth inning for the Blazers, Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) led off the seventh with a single up the middle.

With two outs, Ashley Crawford (New Market, Md./Linganore) drew a walk before an outfield error allowed both runners to score and give McDaniel a one-run lead.

Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) pitched around a two-out infield single in the bottom of the inning for her sixth win of the year.

A Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) two-out, two-run single staked the Green Terror to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Hood sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 advantage.

Three walks, including a Bridgette Ringley pass with the bases loaded, and four singles keyed the inning.

A Samantha Staub (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) RBI single in the second plated Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) to even the game at 4-all.

Wildasin drew a walk to lead off the third inning before stealing second and scoring on a Crawford double for a 5-4 lead.

After Crawford stole third, she scored on an RBI groundout to stretch the lead to 6-4.

A Wolford single and Rachael Potts sacrifice fly sliced the deficit in half after five innings but a Beans single and Warrenfeltz sacrifice fly stretched the lead back to two in the sixth.

In game two, Hood jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings.

Kelly Gaffner's two-run double in the first accounted for the Blazers' two runs in that frame before Sabol led off the second with a home run to spark the three-run frame.

A walk to Lindsey Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) and Beans RBI single pulled the visitors within 5-1 in the third but a hit batter and error stretched the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Back-to-back doubles from Elfert and Warrenfeltz after a Blohm single and Beans sacrifice fly made it a 6-3 game in the top of the fifth but Hood countered with a single run on singles by Taylor Grimmell and Ringley.

A Blohm two-run home run in the top of the sixth trimmed the deficit to 7-5 but a Potts double and Sabol RBI single set the final margin in the bottom of the frame.
