Swarthmore notches pair of wins

Riley goes the distance in both to down McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kathryn Riley pitched complete games in both ends of Swarthmore's Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader softball sweep of McDaniel on Saturday.

The senior allowed three first-inning runs in the opener before holding the Green Terror (11-15, 1-5 CC) to six hits the rest of the way in a 4-3 game-one win. The Garnet (13-17, 5-5 CC) completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Samantha Staub (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) led the McDaniel offense with three hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

With two outs in the first inning, Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) drew a walk and Staub singled ahead of Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River), who cranked a three-run blast to center field for a 3-0 advantage.

A walk, Elizabeth Cushing single and error gave Swarthmore a single run in the second before a Danielle Seltzer walk sandwiched between singles from Riley and Krista Scheirer loaded the bases in the third.

With two outs, Melissa Emmersom's two-run double tied the game before Michele Perch drove in Scheier with the eventual game-winner on a single to left.

Only two runners even reached third base the rest of the way.

In the nightcap, Kate Smayda led off the fourth inning with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice.

A Riley single put runners at the corners before Smayda scored on a Seltzer sacrifice fly.

A Cushing triple plated Riley and Scheier for a 3-0 Garnet lead.

Staub countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame but a Riley double and Scheirer sacrifice fly pushed the lead back to three in the sixth, setting the final margin.

The Green Terror returns to action in a doubleheader against Ursinus at home on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
