McDaniel forges split

Green Terror plates 12 in nightcap to split at Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) rapped out five hits and added three RBIs and two runs scored for McDaniel in a doubleheader split at Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.

The Shorewomen (7-7, 2-2 CC) took the opener 8-5 before the Green Terror (10-8, 1-1 CC) forged the split with a 12-7 victory in game two.

Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) added five hits, five RBIs and two runs scored for McDaniel in the twinbill.

Trailing 1-0 after a two-out error in the bottom of the first in game two, Battista and Lauren Toomey (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) launched back-to-back home runs to lead off the visitor second.

A walk, Samantha Staub (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) double and two-run single from Battista stretched the lead to 4-1 in the third.

Warrenfeltz drilled a two-run double in the fourth to push the lead to 6-1 before Sally Snover had a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to cap a three-run frame that pulled the hosts within 6-4.

After back-to-back two-out walks, Staub, Battista and Toomey all added RBI singles to respond with three Green Terror runs.

A Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) three-run home run in the seventh made it a 12-4 game before the Shorewomen made it interesting with three runs in the final at bat.

After Battista scored on a Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) RBI groundout in the top of the second of game one, the Shorewomen tallied a pair of the bottom of the frame on a Laura Wagoner sacrifice fly and Leigh Carbutt run-producing single.

A Snover steal of home and Shaelan Nottingham RBI double in the third stretched the lead to 4-1 before Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) and Snover exchanged RBI singles in the fourth to make it a 5-2 game.

A Warrenfeltz home run in the fifth cut the deficit to 5-3 before a Wagoner two-run single and Carbutt RBI double stretched the Washington lead to 8-3.

Back-to-back RBIs from Staub and Battista trimmed made it an 8-5 game with one out but a pair of groundouts ended the threat.

The Green Terror returns to action in a doubleheader at home against Ursinus on Sunday. The first game of the twinbill begins at 1 p.m.
